iTunes Review

In ten dizzying years, Eric Clapton soared from the Yardbirds' ambitious blues journeyman to the guitar god of Cream and Derek and the Dominoes, then plummeted to the dregs of heroin addiction. When he finally kicked the habit and got his musical career back on track in the mid '70s with 461 Ocean Boulevard and this more successful follow-up, it struck more than a few fans that Clapton now seemed more interested in the laid-back, country-blues ethos of Don Williams than his own fret-burning legend. His greasy-rhythm hit cover of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" not only underscored the point, but quickly became one of the signature songs of Clapton's career. The even more lush and languorous romantic ballad "Wonderful Tonight" proves his newfound troubadour jones was no fluke, nor his more restrained, lyrical fretwork a mere passing fancy.
