iTunes Review
After the surprise success of its debut album, Ten, Pearl Jam has spent its entire career trying to sustain and expand its impact with varying degrees of commercial success. The group has never succumbed to the easy anthem or played nice towards radio. No Code, its fourth studio album, begins with the quiet, contemplative “Sometimes” where singer Eddie Vedder calls his legions of fans into the intimate tent for a little meditation before kicking up the jams with “Hail, Hail,” where the band pounces from centerstage. “Who You Are” combines a Bo Diddley beat with a Led Zep-eastern-mystic melodic loop that proves PJ find heaviness not just in volume and velocity but in a nod towards spiritual grace. There’s still the blunt punk of “Lukin” and the surfing-alterna-groove of “Mankind” to roughen up the edges, and the harmonica-grunge of “Smile” that reflects the band’s collaboration with Neil Young, but the real beauty here shines through the Vedder ballads, “Present Tense,” “Off He Goes,” and “Around The Bend.” Pearl Jam would never be content as just another hard rock band and every one of its albums stretches the definition without losing the plot.

music for the present tense
by coolio21WOW. I wuz in a music store looking for some new stuff. I came across no code. I've seen this on iTunes before but i never really bothered to check it out because it was considered one of pearl jam's tangent albums after Vitalogy. i didn't really care much for it. however, when i saw it in the music store, i descided to get it because Binaural was considered one of those album's too and it's one of my favorites. Listening to No Code, I was so surprised how much i loved it and related to it, it blew my mind. It has elements of hard rockers, expirementation, and beutiful ballads. Here's a little track by track.
Sometimes: An interesting way to start the album. Either way, this is an interesting album. Kind of like a jazzy kind of feel where Eddie starts spilling his guts out right at the beggining. More of an opener than a track. Pretty good. 8.5/10
Hail,Hail: Just easy rock. It's hard and fun. Talking about a bad relationship. Interesting the way it goes from super hard power chords into a soft guitar riff that ends the song perfectly. Great. 9.5/10
Who You Are: It has a good groove. Not a rocker like Hail,Hail. It almost feels like an african tune for a little. It's nice and has a pretty good groove and good lyrics. Overall, good, lol. 9/10
In My Tree: Interesting lyrics. Kind of a rock tune. Builds up. It still goes pretty hard in the chorus when Vedder whacks out. Good drumming. Overall, pretty average but a good addition to the album. Nothing bad about it. 8.5/10
Smile: Sounds like a Neil Young song. The harmonica and bluesy chords make this song have a nice groove. Ironic lyrics. Overall, pretty average. Has a place in the album and it wouldn't be the same wihout it. 9/10
Off He Goes: A song with some of the best words Vedder has ever written. A slow acoustic ballad about two friends and one friend is always walking away and leaving as the other friend is left in a world of hard. A great song that you'll love. OHHHH YAAAA. 10/10
Habit: Another hard rocker. Vedder screams through the whole thing and sound like he's trying to blow his voice box out. Great song with some really wierd chords. It's still really good. Sounds like something an indie garage band would do. I like it alot. 9.5/10
Red Mosquito: Another blusely kind of rocker. I saw Pearl Jam play this song live with Ben Harper in Los Angeles. That was good. The recorded version didn't match up to the live version, however. Not a stand out but isn't bad. Interesting lyrics. 8.5/10
Lukin: lol. Probably the hardest song on the album. 1 minute of pure distortion, hard drums, and Vedder screaming his face off. Makes me laugh. 9.5/10
Present Tense: Insanely good song. Really really really good and one of the best off the album. This and Off he Goes are tied for first on this album. Nice verse with a blusey. Almost no insturments other than guitar and vocals for the first half of the song. Really good with great lyrics, melody, everyhting. 10/10
Mankind: The only filler on the album. Stone Gossard sings it. IDK, my least favorite on the album and the only one that stand out to me that it doesn't fit the album. Doesn't belong. the album would be better if it weren't on. IDK, it's still catchy. Sounds like a bad Goo goo dolls song. Isn't necessairily horrible though. 7.5/10
I'm Open: Extremely wierd and disturbing almost. Some may argu this is a filler but i don't think so. Think of it as a texture for the album. It provides some color to the overall picture of the album. Starts with Vedder speaking a story of a man who trades his thoughts of magic into thoughts of science and real life. A song about depression and overall the eternal sleep. One of my favorites but I'm sure people will disagree with me. The most expiremental song on the album. listen in the dark. 9/10
Around the Bend: A nice little closer. Sounds like a country song you'd here in a countryside bar. A good closing song with heart. Not much to say. Once again, there is apparent Neil Young influence here. A pretty song and a good closer to an extordinary album. 8.5/10
So, reading the review may give you some input. This is an interesting album unlike any other Pearl Jam album out there. The album is filled with hidden things. For instance, In I'm Open, Vedder says "If he'd known then what he knows know. This same statement is muttered repetedly at the end of Red Mosquito. Also, on the album cover there is a picture of a pyramid with and eye ball in the middle. If you open the actual album up there are more pictures and if you line them all up and look at them from a distance, you can see the same pyramid and eyeball. Any way, there are a few more but I'll let you find those on your own. I also recommend buying the actual album because it is much more cool when you get to see all the surprises on the actual album itself. Overall, the music is extrodinary and another masterpiece to add to the other great Pearl Jam albums. 10/10
the album that made me love pearl jam
by yonibronsteini always liked pearl jam but i never loved them. this record changed that. when i heard this record they became my favorite band. there's real emotion in this work. there's real angst and real struggle, and you can hear the band on their collective soul search. ten and vs. are about rocking hard, and vitalogy is about experimentation and screwing around. no code, on the other hand, is about digging deep. very deep.
Brilliance. Sheer brilliance. (Not for Casual Fans)
by nanoman 2.0 A WARNING TO CASUAL FANS: this is not for you Vitalogy reference! This is not for people who heard "Even Flow" on the radio and thought they should buy a Pearl Jam album. There's really nothing wrong with that, you just won't like this.
However, if you are ready for a more edgy Pearl Jam album, you will not be dissapointed. I can honestly say that there is not a single song on this record I don't like. Sure, they take time to grow on you, but that isn't necessarily bad, and if you're gonna get into Pearl Jam's deeper tracks, you should probably get used to it. :)
They never lose their sense of rock n' roll, though the lyrics are much better than anything on Ten, and the tone is more somber in some places, but they really have fine tuned the slower songs here. "Off He Goes" is unbelievably beautiful, as well as "Around the Bend", and the hushed tone of "Sometimes"
It's really not fair for me to do highlights, as the whole album is brilliant, but some of my favorites are "In My Tree", "Present Tense", and "Off He Goes".
If you like Vitalogy or Binaural, you'll certainly love this, but if you're looking to take the next step after Ten, wait a while.
