Album Review

On their second album, Nashville indie trio Apollo Up! refuses to stick to one specific musical style. "Cut Up," for example, unexpectedly delves into the kind of A Certain Ratio style early-'80s Brit funk recently rediscovered by a generation of Franz Ferdinand followers, complete with spiky trumpet interjections. Further along, on "Even if You Don't Die" and "Custom Critical," lead singer Jay Leo Phillips trots out a startlingly accurate impersonation of the young Elvis Costello set to Ted Leo-style blends of punk and old-school R&B. Later still, "Tennessee for Victory" is a bracing two-minute pop-punk blast with a fists-in-the-air chorus. The connecting thread of all of this is the bristling energy captured by producer Jeremy Ferguson, whose early work with the vaguely similar Be Your Own Pet carries a similar frisson. It's extremely easy to pick out the influences on Chariots of Fire — way too easy, in fact — but there's a spark of creativity to this young band that suggests that their future albums may integrate these influences into something more unique.

the iTunes written review of this record is inaccurate.

it also contradicts iTunes own policy of "praising music on its own terms" not at the expense of other artists or genres. yes, jay sounds like elvis costello (the only accurate part of the review). so does anyone who chain smokes like he does. tennessee for victory does not have a chorus. NOTHING about this record is "pop punk." someone else who actually knows things about music should write reviews for iTunes.

this record is amazing and different and sounds nothing like any other band you know. just buy it.

straight-up rock

as the most underrated band in nashville, apollo up continues to play to packed clubs but gets little press outside the area. on the other hand, some of us fear any success they may have because their raw sound should be left alone, not over-produced. let's hope somebody like Jay Robbins gets ahold of their next recording opportunity.

The Return of Rock!

There are no gimmicks here, Apollo Up! is just a great band. Do not feel ashamed if you find yourself playing the air guitar or drums, everyone that listens to them does it. Don't believe me? Try and not rock out to Invisible Syllable, Walking the Plank, Even If You Don't Die or get down with the bongo solo during Custom Critical. Trust me, you will be glad you got this CD so when Apollo Up! hits it big, you can say you new them back in the day.

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Nashville, TN

Genre: Indie Rock

Years Active: '00s

Nashville post-hardcore trio Apollo Up! blends punky aggression with a fondness for tricky song structures and unexpected dynamic shifts, creating a cerebral but impassioned sound equally akin to the deceptively accessible experimentalism of Ted Leo & the Pharmacists and the cool intensity of Fugazi....
