iTunes Review

The Steve Miller band underwent a shake-up in 1968, losing singer/guitarist Boz Scaggs and gaining keyboard player Ben Sidran. Released the following year, Brave New World reflects Sidran’s brainy approach to blues-pop as well as Miller’s versatile talents as a guitarist and songwriter. As with their two previous releases, the band manages to combine a feel for no-nonsense blues with an expansive psychedelic vision while displaying a knack for ear-snagging hooks and sly humor. “Can’t You Hear Your Daddy’s Heartbeat” and “Got Love ‘Cause You Need It” are deceptively down ‘n’ dirty numbers executed with Hendrix-like instrumental finesse. Miller exposes his gently romantic side on the patchouli-dipped “Seasons” before taking off into the pop stratosphere with “Space Cowboy.” From the electronic folderol of the title song to the nursery rhyme dreaminess of “Kow Kow,” the album explores a host of textures and strategies. Paul McCartney (under the nom de plume Paul Ramon) sits in for “My Dark Hour,” a careening jazz/rock excursion. By keeping the tone light and playful, Miller and his group manage to roam freely without descending into pretentiousness. Brave New World rewards thorough exploration.

Brave New World - a really great album

by DJfancypants

This record is a highly satisfying experience, taken as a whole from beginning to end. Highlights include "Space Cowboy," "Celebration Song" and the beautiful "Kow Kow Calculator." The album ends with the basher "My Dark Hour," which features Paul McCartney on drums, bass and backing vocals. Mr. Miller ended up 'borrowing' the riff from this song for his more famous hit "Fly Like An Eagle." A recommended buy.

Excellent! The last of his best 60s music.

Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World World were Miller's most creative and original albums. Every thing else he did after is pretty much standard rock done equally as well by many others. But these three caught something that was in the air in those days. Overlooked and under appreciated, Steve Miller at his best.

Dripping the blues

Before Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams, Steve Miller put together a fantastic trilogy of albums, drenching Texas blues with San Francisco folksy psychedelia. Brave New World was the last of these and, arguably, the best. While "Children of the Future" had portended where Miller was headed, this album was indeed the culmination. If all you know of Steve Miller is the pop music that came from "The Joker" and beyond, check out this album for a piece of the roots that all else was built on.
