iTunes Review

The Isleys’ 1972 Brother Brother Brother answers the question: How mellow can funk be? With acoustic piano forefronted as much or more than electric guitar, the album is an intriguing stylistic swerve even for these adventurous guys. Three tunes come from the songbook of Carole King, then the queen of soft rock. “Brother Brother”’s message offers reassurance in the face of post-’60s political upheaval as well as did Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, while “It’s Too Late” receives a scorching 10-minute-plus workout. Among the originals, “Work to Do” captures a striver’s reality that, smartly, doesn’t note whether he’s in a blue or white collar; its viewpoint was later expanded in Vanessa Williams’ ’90s cover. “Pop That Thang” marries the group’s trademark dance music to its evolving interest in bedroom soul. And the closing ballad, “Love Put Me On the Corner,” is apparently obscure only because of Brother’s near-glut of fine stuff.

Lil Wayne Gives Props

by The Lead Singer from Arverne

"Lay Away" was sampled for the Lil Wayne song "Receipt" on his album "Tha Carter II"...I love The Isley Brothers, (especially their classic hit "This Old Heart of Mine"), and had never heard "Lay Away" or this album before hearing Waynes sample...Im sure glad i did because this is a fantastic album all the wat through, and "Lay Away" should be regarded as one of the best funk songs ever...One of my new all time favorites...

Pop that Thang was the record back in '72 along with Lay Away, i'm glad their early funk work has been reissued here

This album truly represents one of their finest hours. It's a shame no one sees fit to give it a nod. Check it out!
