iTunes Review

After nearly two successful decades on the major label tilt-a-whirl, Canada's beloved musical mirth-makers stepped back into the indie world with this '06 release, a move that seems to have both sparked their effervescent muse and, more importantly, expanded their songwriting focus. It's not that their notorious sense of humor is any less evident, as witnessed by such typically canted, Steven Page/Ed Robertson-penned delights as "Bank Job," "Bull In a China Shop," and "Rule the World With Love." But it's now balanced by the sort of genuinely mature reflection that courses through Page's accordion-banjo driven lament "Everything Had Changed." Perhaps the most welcome new facet of BNL here are the confident contributions of band members Kevin Hearn ("Sound of Your Voice," "Vanishing") and Jim Creegan ("Peterborough and the Kawathas"), literate, well-crafted songs that expand the band's trademark sound at a time when most bands are content retreading past glories.

A Refreshing Maturity from a Perennial Favorite

by MarshallVoit

This album, by FAR BNL's most mature sound thus far, is nothing short of incredible. Full of biting social commentary, singable melodies, some heavy rock, and (of course) some of the best lyric-writing out there, Barenaked Ladies Are Me is a tour de force for this group.

First: If you are not a huge fan, or you get flustered when you take in a LOT of music, do NOT buy the 29-track version. BNL released this album so that each listener might be able to get the music the way that s/he wants to. Don't overwhelm yourself, because if you do, you'll end up with a tainted view of this album. First buy Barenaked Ladies Are Me, then try Barenaked Ladies Are Men.

There is in this album happiness, angst, conflict... it shows such a depth of emotion that to listen to it all (29 tracks) in one sitting, while aurally amazing, probably will not do it justice. If you want to truly experience the album as (I think) it should be experienced, give each track its due time on your speakers, and really feel the message of each.

If you can allow BNL to grow out of their silly façade, and hear the maturity that exudes from this album, then you will not possibly be able to miss the sheer artistry of this group and this album. A true musical gem.

What Happened?

This disc was such a disapointment, I have never before regreted buying a BNL cd before previewing it. Everything to Everyone was my favorite so far so I just bought this one because I was starving for more E to E.
