iTunes Review

The Band sharpened their chops backing Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan before finally shuttling off on their own as a perfectly balanced five man unit. Their first two albums in particular, Music from Big Pink and The Band, captured a brilliant mix of old-time Americana and tight, barroom rock where Hammond organ and piano did battle with electric guitars and country-fed harmonies. Ardent Band fans will insist on hearing their songs in context of their original albums; however, the group make for a riveting singles band as well. “The Weight,” Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “The Shape I’m In,” and Dylan numbers such as “Tears of Rage,” “I Shall Be Released,” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece” are essential pieces of late-‘60s, early-‘70s rock n’ roll. The addition of sometimes overlooked later tracks such as “Acadian Driftwood” and “Ophelia” nicely round out this succinct collection. However, it is difficult to distill the Band’s brilliance to so few numbers. They possess a deep catalog worthy of thorough inspection.

The Band, The Last Waltz and The Greatest Musicians Ever

by obama08 YES WE CAN

This album may be the most underrated and unknown rock album for how amazing it is. All of the songs here are great, and a true tribute to The Band, one of the greatest rock bands of all time. All of these musicians are extremely talented whatever you think if their song lyrics or political views. I recommend you watch the movie The Last Waltz, which was the last concert given by The Band. It has incredibly good live performances from The Band's concert including songs by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Neil Young. It also has interviews with members of The Band which give great insight into The Band's amazing classic rock journey. And don't just buy one song on this album, it's only seven bucks and every song is amazing. LONG LIVE "THE BAND"

Essential collection by one of rock's best bands

This is an expansive and deep collection by one of the most deservedly influential bands in rock. For those who only know "The Weight," you're in for a treat, including some of The Band's later and best works, like the haunting "It Makes No Difference." But a word to the iTunes reviewer, however well-intentioned, who wrote that "Hammond organ and piano did battle with electric guitars" on these songs: Fans of Garth Hudson know that he never played a Hammond organ, but coaxed those growly sounds from his favorite Lowrey organ.

The greatest band ever!!!!!!!!!!

There is little I can add to all the praise that has been heaped upon them here. Just wanted to correct an earlier post which referred to The Band as a southern rock band. Actually, with the exception of drummer Levon Helm, who is from Arkansas, the rest of The Band were all Canadians. Levon Helm sang alot of their most popular songs like "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down", and most of "The Weight" which is why alot of people mistakingly think them a southern band.

For roughly half a decade, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed...
