iTunes Review

It’s no accident that both of Sugarland’s albums (to date) refer to motion in their titles. 2004’s Twice The Speed Of Life was filled with a restless drive that helped make “Something More” into a massive country hit. Enjoy The Ride (2006) is fueled by a similar defiant energy. Leading the charge is Jennifer Nettles, a brashly charismatic singer able to convey the unfettered optimism of her band’s songs. Enhanced by Kristian Bush’s harmonies, Nettles’ forceful vocals rise to heroic heights on tracks like “Settlin’” and “County Line.” Some of the album’s most satisfying moments come when the group offers lovingly-detailed invocations of their native South. “One Blue Sky” finds glimmers of hope in a devastated New Orleans, while “Sugarland” recreates the simple joys of small-town Texas. Acoustic guitars and mandolins add a pleasing contrast to the rock-slanted tracks here. Laden with galvanizing anthems and odes to their home region, The Speed Of Life finds Sugarland making the most of their rocket-like ascent into country stardom.
