Absolutely Amazing

It's a crime that this album only has one review. Now it has two.

unexpected. wonderfully unexpected.

I'm a little at a loss for words on this one. I clicked the Album link in iTunes to hear what others had to say. no reviews yet, so I had to chime in.

First of all I don’t understand the Explicit Lyric warning. There are virtually no lyrics whatsoever, a few sound samples of voices in Part 2 of "Radio Swam Is Down" (sounds like a television in the background) and there are clearly lyrics on "Patterns Not People," but by and large this is instrumental. I almost want to download it from iTunes to see if there’s some bizarre different version than the one I have, but all the 30 second samples match up to my copy.

This album reminds me of a film soundtrack. Laura is definitely of the Indie Rock ilk, but there's a string running through Radio Swan that resists singles. "Numbers Stations" and "Another Near Miss" could stand alone easily enough, but it'd be like watching the climax and denouement of a film only, without the bulk of the story. Radio Swan needs to be listened to from track 1 through 11 to really get what Laura is doing here. That’s where it’s like a good film soundtrack. And not a compilation of songs from different artists, but a single artist/group who composed music for a film (think Ennio Morricone). Radio Swan is telling a story. There’s at least one 64 minute and 15 second movie waiting somewhere to be made from this. It will surely conjure one in the listener.

The only band that comes close to this sort of album experience is Sigur Rós. If you’re a fan of them, you’ll appreciate Laura for many of the same reasons.
