Album Review

Jump Little Children's first full-length under the umbrella of Atlantic has the band moving away from their ragged Irish indie folk to concentrate on a louder, more up-front alternative rock/pop approach. Produced by Brad Jones (Matthew Sweet, Imperial Drag), there's an accent on swelling, instantly gracious choruses, but the band seems a bit too tentative in their new direction to infuse the songs with the self-belief necessary for the music to rise above American indie convention. A distortion-filled "Strawberry Fields Forever" ("Violent Dreams") and the XTC by way of Beck "Habit" are clever, and two of the strongest songs of their career. It's the apparent influence of touring with Seven Mary Three and Rusted Root or having "Cathedrals" played in IKEA that seems to have done the most damage.

Over and over

This is a great album, but it's just a glimpse of how amazing these guys are live...They're the only band I've seen 10 times, and they've blown away everyone who has gone to a show with me.

Is it odd?

Is it odd that there is a band called "The Cathedrals" that made a song called "Jump Little Children" and that the band called "Jump Little Children" Made a song called "Cathedrals"??? Either way its an awesome song!

Brilliant

jump, little children (now just "Jump") deserves a lot more recognition than they have received. All of their albums are incredible, but in my opinion Magazine is their best.

Some of my favorite tracks include:
Cathedrals (obviously)
Violent Dreams
B-13
Say Goodnight
Close Your Eyes

I could do without "Body Parts" and "Habit", both of which are erratic and non-melodic. Probably the result of the primary song writer(s) indulging some of the other band members.
