iTunes Review

When Philly’s Jill Scott released her head-turning debut in 2000, the neo-soul movement was peaking with the success of artists such as D’Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Macy Gray, and Lauryn Hill. When she returned four years later with her second studio CD, the landscape had changed greatly. No matter: Beautifully Human is another persuasive testament to her talent, independence, and character. “I am not afraid to be your lady, I am not afraid to be your whore,” she sings on “I’m Not Afraid.” On the uplifting “Golden,” she celebrates her freedom and individuality: “I be high-steppin’, y’all, lettin’ the joy unfold.” “Bedda at Home,” a riveting paean to her man, unfolds slowly atop a funky hip-hop beat and oozes sexuality. “Family Reunion,” with its ‘70s-style string arrangement, is an enchanting, disarming, lighthearted, and almost sentimental celebration of aunts, uncles, and cousins--complete with tales of drinking, adultery, potato salad, lemon cake, and Frankie Beverly. The tasteful, engaging music skillfully blends jazz, soul, and hip-hop, and Scott struts confidently across these 16 silky, hypnotic tracks, revealing her inner strength and courage by being seductive and intelligent, not bombastic or confrontational.

Can't say enough

This is but one of Jill Scott's wonderful vocals that moves me to not only dance and feel uplifted but to know that I am not in this crazy world alone in my thoughts and feelings. There are others that are not only feeling and thinking like I do but I am also reminded that some are far worse off and I should be greatful and give thanks as well and lend a hand to my brothers and sisters in this world.

POETIC SOUL

What can I say this girl has soul to the tenth power. I have had the pleasure to see Jill perform three times and the third time was a sold out show the my partner suprised me with tickets and we were in the front row. Even when Jill was going through her divorce she still performed the best I've seen. Jill is strong and a beautiful person that I hope will be around for years to come....

A mature R&B vocalist who excelled most with slower, sensual material ("Slowly, Surely," "I'm Not Afraid," "My Love") and was versatile enough to pack plenty of punch with anthems of pride and self-empowerment ("Golden," "Family Reunion," "Hate on Me"), Jill Scott grew up in north Philadelphia and...
