Submerge is a good journey into peaceful depths

by Menage a Music

The four long tracks that make up Jim McGrath’s latest, Submerge, is not the casual background soundscape that some may expect from the array of mixed styles often gathered together under the World Music umbrella. It calls for attention in the sense that if you plan to relax with it, be prepared to relax with the depth that the title suggests.

The reverberating drone and drums of “New Day” are immediately commanding, along with the haunting, breathy bansuri flute melody played by Dominic Dean Breaux. “Passage” is a stunning track featuring Sanskrit chanting that calls out the sacred sounds of the great life cycle—creation, sustenance, and dissolution/re-creation. The musical composition finds resonance with the cycle as multiple voices move in waves from dissonance to harmonizing union, highlighted throughout by Rara Avis’ phenomenal overtone singing.

In “The River Serene,” McGrath’s polyrhythmic percussion and cascading water sounds evoke a mystical passion and paint a wordless picture of serenity. I am inspired and reminded of why I sampled an earlier McGrath track, “Kubing Trance,” from the album Drum Spirit on my own release, All Six Senses. The development of this artist is evident again on the title track, the over 15 minutes of which could well inspire one to trance dance around the tribal fire as much as to dive head first into the element of water.

Suggested activities while listening to Submerge: trance dancing, healing ritual, divination, lovemaking.
