iTunes Review

Writer’s Block was the stunning breakthrough album for the Swedish indie pop trio Peter Bjorn & John, following a couple of decent albums that pointed the band towards romantic pop built on stripped down instrumentation and equally naked emotional expression. A strong sense of melancholy permeates, but never overwhelms the songs, due to the use of bubbling arrangements, electronic beats, shimmering synthesizers, and Peter Moren’s wistful, heartbreaking vocal delivery. Spicing songs up with things like steel drums, bongos, insanely catchy whistling and reverb soaked vocals that evoke an out-of-body-experience are brilliant moves, and of course with lyrics as honest and direct as, “I’m all about you, you’re all about me / we’re all about each other” — well, let’s just say love is in the air in a big way, and it’s hard to feel down about that.  “Up Against the Wall” has to be seven of the most heartbreaking minutes in contemporary pop (with “Roll the Credits” providing the next six and a half!), while “Objects of My Affection” and “Start to Melt” might provide us with some of the most powerful shoegazing of the new millennium. The heart of the album is the charming and guitarless “Young Folks,” featuring those cool bongo drums and the vocal duet of Moren and Victoria Bergsman (formerly of The Concretes), a palpable testament to new love. Perfection.

This entire album is filled with fantastic songs that are actually unique from one another. Peter Bjorn and John have a unique style and, unlike a lot of artists these days, they use meaningful and deep lyrics in their songs. Words can't explain how amazing this album is, but it is not flawless. I found that the songs nearer to the end (only Poor Cow, Ancient Curse, and All Those Expectations) get a little weaker, because of a more cacophonous and darker sound. I prefer the more lighthearted instrumentation of the earlier songs (as seen in Young Folks and Amsterdam).

In my opinion, the very best songs on the album are Up Against the Wall, Objects of My Affection, Amsterdam, and Young Folks. (THESE ARE THE MUST BUYS)

The next best songs are still incredble, and they are Paris 2004, Start to Melt, Let's Call It Off (both versions), The Chills, and Roll the Credits.

The final songs, which are still solid songs are Poor Cow, Ancient Curse, and All Those Expectations.

Perhaps the worst album//song ever

Are these "folks" tone deaf? Are they purposefully singing out of key? Come on, people...I can't believe so many of you are liking this song (Young Folks) and album. To me that signals that the end is near. I think this takes the "Worst Song Ever" award away from Gilvert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally." Bjorn and John, time to hit music school.
