iTunes Review

Given the acclaim and widespread success engendered by the Kaiser Chiefs’ 2005 debut and its preternaturally infectious single, “I Predict a Riot,” pop history suggest the Leeds outfit should have been prepared for a sophomore slump. Instead, what the Chiefs deliver on their’07 follow-up seems more akin to the Red Sox teams of recent Octobers.  The single “Ruby” instantly reminds that this is a band blessed with a seemingly endless knack for pop hooks, a deceptive throwaway of a song that seems a tailor-made singalong for a pub full of pint-fueled punters. More gratifyingly, while their familiar, propulsive pop sense powers “I Can Do It Without You” and “Highroyds,” the band hasn’t lost an ounce of its wit or political edge elsewhere on the collection, just doused it with the irony and subversion that are at the core of tracks like “Angry Mob,” the airy ballad “Learnt My Lesson Well” and suitably weary tone of  “Retirement.”

The Chiefs Will Change The Way We Look At Music

by rikku886

In all honesty, I have never stumbled upon an album of unparalleled brilliance such as this. I had heard their most popular song (and personally, my favorite), Ruby, on PGR 4 and was taken aback, as it quickly became my favorite song ever, with its unique sound and upbeat feeling. Months later I had forgotten about the song and had not even bothered to check out the band. More recently; however, I stumbled upon this album under the Alterna-Pop Essentials when I caught notice of "Ruby". I thought no song could compare to the one that instantly became, in my mind, the greatest hit (and, in retrospect, I was right), but after scanning through the reviews, both good and bad, and sampling a few of the songs I thought, "What the heck? I'll buy the whole thing". Dissappointment was an impossibility. Almost every song is unique to each other, so there's something almost everyone will find appealing. They've got slow songs, fast songs, upbeat songs, and mellow songs, and they all coagulate into one beautiful album that blows the other artists of today out of the water. In a sense, I'm glad that this type of music isn't more popularized because, once the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs become mimicked by the mainstream media, it will no longer possess their unique quality. Here's to the band who changed my world and here's to the hope that no one will ruin their amazing sound with imitations for the sake of publicity.

A run-down on each individual song:

Ruby (10/10): As I said before, my favorite song. It's uplifting, fun-loving, and catchy; if you won't buy into the rest of the album, get this song for sure.

The Angry Mob (9/10): Probably my second favorite on the album. It's different in the beginnning, but let it sink in. The bridge is the best part, when you have to turn it up loud.

Heat Dies Down (8/10): Fast-tempoed (think I spelled that wrong) and catchy, Heat Dies Down is another great song to continue the album. If you liked the above songs, get this one as well.

Highroyds (7/10): Good, solid song, but a little different. Not recommended for those who aren't willing to dig into "odder-sounding" songs. It's not way out there, however.

Love's Not A Competition (8/10): Truth be told, when I heard the beginning of this song I shut it down immediately. Slow and steady, this song isn't for those energetic types, but it grew on me and is now one of my favorite songs on the album. If you buy it, listen to the whole thing. Give it a try before you bring it down.

Thank You Very Much (9/10): Great, catchy song. Love the muted guitar strums during the chorus; gives it a kind of "edgey" feeling. Recommended for lovers of the first three songs.

I Can Do It Without You (7/10): Not my favorite song, but it is actually pretty good. The only thing that throws me is the chorus, when the lead brings his voice up and down at the same pitches. I don't know, it just sounds robotic. Some may love it, though, give it a try.

My Kind of Guy (?/10): Okay, I wasn't totally honest. I haven't listened to all of their songs yet, haha. I don't have a review for this one. Sorry!

Everything Is Average Nowadays (8/10): Don't turn this song off when you hear the beginning. It may seem really weird initially, but trust me, it gets better. I love the verses how they somewhat make the pitch of his voice match the note on the electric guitar. Good stuff here.

Boxing Champ (0/10): Don't yell at me if you like this song and think I'm an idiot. Slow songs I can usually deal with, but this one just doesn't cut it for me. Don't just shut it down because of my review though, see what others have said.

Learnt My Lesson Well (9/10): I LOVE this song. It makes you want to just "Get up off your seat". Catchy chorus and verses make it a fun little tune.

Try Your Best (?/10): Okay, haven't listened to this one yet, either.

Retirement (?/10): Or this one, sorry!

Ruby (Live In Berlin) (0/10): I'm not giving it a 0 because of its quality, but because you should only get it if you're getting the whole album. The live version doesn't do the great song justice, I recommend only buying the recorded version.

Hope this all helps, try "Off With Their Heads" if you loved this album; there's plenty more great hits on there, too.
