iTunes Review

Along with Marisa Monte and Seu Jorge, the young Sao Paulo songstress Céu is at the forefront of the popular revival of the sounds of early seventies Brazil. Like her contemporaries she draws upon the influence of musical giants like Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso, but blends these influences with a decidedly contemporary approach to rhythm and production, adding electronic flourishes to lilting sambas and delirious layers of overdubs to simple folk melodies. Though Céu’s album might be classified as worldbeat thanks to the presence of turntablist DJ Marco, and the warm Portishead-like production of Beto Villares, the sounds here are largely organic, and the adventurous fusion of styles on Céu never sounds forced or insincere. Instead, Céu proves herself to be a stunningly original songwriter, juxtaposing the soulful horns of “Rainha” against an infectious Bossa strum and layers of angelic vocalizations. Though Céu stumbles somewhat on her beautifully delivered, but somewhat too straightforward, cover of Bob Marley’s “Concrete Jungle”, she has managed to deliver an engaging and stylistically diverse debut that ranks among 2007’s best Brazilian releases.

I LOVE this album!

I'm a huge Sade fan. I haven't really found an artist to replace her but CEU comes in a very, very close second. I heard about this group from Starbucks. Then iTunes gave away a free song from CEU. That song made me buy the album. I don't speak portuguese but I still love this album. Especially the Bob Marley remake of Concrete Jungle. It's kinda like a mix of hiphop, bossa nova and neo-soul. It's NICEEEEE and current.

A voice that will freeze you in your tracks!

Let me say that when I first heard a track from this artist, it froze me in my tracks and I just had to find the CD. I searched high and low and I found it and I had it for a while but now Itunes offers it and you are in for a real treat. Her voice is smooth, beautifully melodic and I don't speak a lick of Portuguese (or Spanish), but it doesn't mean that I don't understand beauty when I hear it. Listen to here sing is like an exotic vacation fro your ears. She is like a Brazilian Sade. My favorites are Masi Um Lamento, Roda and Malemolencia. She has several up-tempos some (Ave Cruz, O Ronco Da Cuica, Rainha, etc) and she does have on English song (Concrete Jungle). But I think over all this is a brilliant sounding CD and if you like smooth jazz you will love this. Do not limit yourselves to just English speaking music because you are missing out on a real gem here. Besides, this is also great date music.
