Meliflous Voice. Funky Jazz beat. Great Album!

Phenomenal album. This singer is also a member of the Wailin' Jennys, but this album stands quite well on its own. Comparable to Norah Jones or Diana Krall, Heather's silky voice will be a treat to your ears.

A Wonderful First Album, an Excellent Group, and an Unusually Talented Singer-Songwriter

by Dennis Kim

I first heard this group in live performance and subsequently saw them twice more before this album was released. They are an enormously skilled group of musicians, and this album is an accurate representation of their sound, which is slightly unusual due to the mix of instruments (female vocal, guitar, bass, drums, clarinet or alto sax, and bass clarinet or baritone sax). Overall the sound of this album seems to be a unique combination of jazz with some roots influence, to speak roughly, and is alternately smokey and sultry or lyrical and stately. The degree of their musicianship is to some degree inapparent because, while each of them is individually very talented, they are so well coordinated as a group that they present a fluid, unified, and seamless sound. The recording, blessed by an effective simplicity, has great balance and stereo image, with a live group performance quality.

The namesake of the group, Heather Masse, who wrote most of the songs and sings all of them, is incredibly talented as both a singer and a songwriter. While to hear her perform live is sublime, possessed as she is of both a beautiful spirit and a clear, uplifting voice, most of what is so wonderful about her singing comes through on this album. Her songs seem both simple and straightforward but at the same time nuanced and lyrical in all the right ways. They possess an unusual maturity and underlying complexity. I believe that her musical abilities will only continue to develop more and more. Although she maintains an active touring schedule (she is a member of the Wailin Jennys), Ms. Masse appears to update the demo recordings on her myspace page with some frequency. And in her singing, song writing, and arrangements of an eclectic mix of classic, underperformed songs ("You don't know what love is," "Time after time," etc.), it is clear that she is likely to be an enormous talent and a true asset to American music, hopefully with a steadily accumulating opus of recorded work and songwriting.

I recommend this album highly to those who are attracted to this kind of sound, to those who appreciate a group of extremely talented musicians working towards a common sound, and to those who are looking for new and promising singer-songwriters. I can't easily think of another recording or artist that would compare in terms of sound or potential. As someone who has been a musician and otherwise personally engaged with music for my entire life, I cannot speak highly enough about Heather Masse's talents. My only complaint about this album is that there is not more of it.
