Album Review

Before her endearing single "The Way I Am" became the soundtrack for Old Navy commercials, Ingrid Michaelson was another anonymous, witty musician singing tales of love and loss to an audience that didn't yet exist. She funneled that uncalculated energy into Girls and Boys, her debut offering of clever, twisting piano pop. Released independently on the singer's own label, Girls and Boys is a rare treat — an album created without the constraints of a label or the demands of modern radio, yet wholly able to woo both. Michaelson clearly favors well-crafted pop melodies, but she ornaments these hooks with fractured instrumentation, shifting between time signatures during the chorus of "Masochist" and allowing guitars to drop out mid-song in "Die Alone." When she saunters into full-fledged coffeehouse mode with "The Way I Am," she subverts the song's Norah Jones-styled progression by adding handclaps, echoing harmonies, and quirky lyrics. "I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair," Michaelson croons with a hint of vibrato, making the sentiment sweet instead of condemning. Brainy turns of phrase pepper the rest of the album ("Glass" describes a make-out session in sexy detail, with Michaelson recalling how she "rolled around on kitchen floors [and] tied my tongue in pretty bows with yours"), and Girls and Boys ultimately remains true to its title, examining the relationships between both titular characters without delving into too many grown-up issues. Perhaps Michaelson will compose a thematic sequel entitled Women and Men in the future, but these well-voiced love songs leave little room for complaint.

I first heard Ingrid's music on that Old Navy sweater commercial. I immediately downloaded "The Way I Am" because I loved the chill sound Motownesque guitar combo (I am a sucker for throwback music). I thought about downloading the whole album, but as I listened to to the previews off of iTunes, I didn't really get it. Most of the stuff didn't have the same type of arrangement, and sounded really moody. But I had a friend who owned an autographed copy of Girls and Boys, and I borrowed it from her because she promised it was great music. After the first listen I still didn't really get it, but something prompted me to relisten to it. I don't know why, I guess I was convinced that if I liked the one song SO MUCH I should give the other songs a fair shot.
I grew to like, then love the entire album, and now it is one of my favorites. This happens to me a lot- many of my favorite albums are not ones that I loved immediately. Ingrid's music is challenging in that way. Most of it is not the catchiest, radio pop that you like right away because you can't stop singing it and it's been so produced that it doesn't really make you think anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of that stuff too, but an album with 2 or 3 singles and the rest filler doesn't age well. Once you get tired of the singles, you get tired of the rest. But this album is more challenging- it challenges you to think and feel and understand it. And the more often you listen, you love it more instead of hating it more.
Obviously I love the album as a whole, but the standouts for me are Breakable, The Hat, The Way I Am, Overboard, Highway, and Far Away. There are a few songs on here that I would only listen to in the context of the whole album, but these songs (that I just listed) are great on their own, and probably are the catchiest. Ingrid's voice throughout the album is sweet and gently soaring. Her lyrics are simplistic and lovely, and her phrasing is really unique.
This album only gets 4 stars because it's not perfect, but I can't think of a single album that would deserve 5 stars. I still love it, though, and I challenge everyone to learn to love it too.
