Mayday if You Wanna Believe
by Spinal PatThe Cells have been around since the turn of the century and rocked the world with their debut, in 2002, of 'We Can Replace You.' Anchored by lead singer/songwriter Cory Hance's mastery of resonance and depraved worldview, The Cells sound can best be described (from their myspace site) as "two orange being nailed together." Add the dash of bass man Johnny Furman and the crack-boom-bam of drummer Mark Doyle, and The Cells have the enthralling grip best described as the jaws of life.
Mayday is a collage of abject warnings, weary characters and the hopeful/hopeless signs of life in the post millenium. 'Watchout' kicks off the disk, with a frantic, almost red light siren advisory on the dependence and authority of outside influences. This "delusional afterthought" is played out further, later in the disk, within the excellent 'Grocery Store.'
But its not all toughness and fury. 'Love Song Somewhere,' with its choral exhortation of a "little more you and a little less me" allows for a journey that everyone has taken, if only to risk intimacy. And the betrayal of love is form fitted into the achingly distraught, 'The Drugs.'
Within all these urgent song escapes, there is always The Cells exhilarating, passionate rock reverberation. 'She Robot' makes the dance of "I've been there" all that more acute. 'I Don't Need You Anymore' has one of Hance's ringing riffs woven throughout. 'Drag it On' and 'Hey Hey' are sing along anthems that encourage lines like "if I had a bullet in my head maybe we'd settle down." to ring out like bumper sticker slogans.
The best way to celebrate the recent May Day is to play Mayday. The best way to celebrate getting up in the morning is to play Mayday.
The drugs...
by chicago_lsnrWell there is certainly a lot to say about the sheer pop sparkle and shine of the Cells, but I think the music speaks for itself. The drugs, Love song somewhere, damen ave. breakdown, grocery store - my favs. Great Chicago band with tons of edge, attitude and fun!
