iTunes Review

Kelly Willis occupies a niche between the Nashville mainstream and the hipper shores of alt-country, and 2007’s Translated from Love represents her best work in nearly a decade. Her purring twang and saucily-slurred phrasing (with a hint of laughter or tears in nearly every line) is as beguiling as ever. The sunny abandon Willis brings to such tunes as “Nobody Wants to Go to the Moon Anymore,” “I Must Be Lucky,” and “The More That I’m Around You” is irresistible. She indulges her playful side with a gender-switching take on “Teddy Boys” (a British pub rock-styled tune) and a call-and-response rendition of “Success” (an old Iggy Pop favorite). From the bittersweet Tex-Mex ambiance of the title track to the early ‘60s teen-pop drama of “Don’t Know Why,” Willis blurs distinctions between rock and country, and producer Chuck Prophet’s use of vintage synthesizers alongside the acoustic guitars and banjos adds an extra sonic tang. Translated from Love speaks to any country fan who likes their music smart, heartfelt and just a little adventurous.

The pure soul and grit of Kelly's voice ages over time like a fine wine. This album has so many solid tracks that provide the perfect vehicle for the delivery of her amazing voice. Her range of expression has no boundaries, making what might sound like an ordinary "country" song into a truly fresh adventure of passion and music. Buy this album and enjoy it, then share it. Great lyrics and musical production round out the package.

As good as it gets - and such a fresh sound that is missing from today's Country scene.

Wow! Where did Ms. Kelly Willis come from? A new direction for country music--A blend of Pam Tillis and Deanna Carter. Sweet Sundown is the perfect song for a roadtrip or dancing alone in your room. I can't listen to it without tapping my feet. Highly recommend!

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Although the work of new traditionalist singer/songwriter Kelly Willis earned widespread critical acclaim, she found little in the way of comparable commercial success; her sound, a smart hybrid of country and rock, simply assimilated both musical styles too well to gain acceptance in either camp.
