Album Review
The Casual Lean's debut album is unexceptional indie rock lacking much in the way of interesting tunes, lyrics or arrangements. On the other hand, Swears is affiliated with no particular circa-2007 musical subgenres, so at least the New Bedford, MA quintet aren't trying desperately to sound like the new Fall Out Boy or the next Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, so that's something. Unfortunately, the band's sorta-punky, sorta-dancey aesthetic falls between two stools: Swears is neither angular and jagged enough to appeal to the new wave revivalists, nor angsty and bombastic enough to sway the emo kids, which leaves songs like "Keep It On" sounding oddly flaccid and half-hearted. Parts of Swears, like the spirited opener "The Bride," get over based on the band's youthful enthusiasm, and album highlight "Cut the Kite" features singer and keyboardist Justin Oliver's most interesting vocals, particularly on the rhythmically loose verses, but this is a difficult album to work up much enthusiasm over.

iTunes is lacking in business skills
by jimitreWhy would you carry a product in your catalog if you're going to dissuade your customers from purchasing it? Sometimes I hate iTunes.
Ignore the review. Sample some of the songs and you'll probably wind up buying this album even if it doesn't appeal to "emo kids" and "new wave revivalists." There's a reason these guys have a loyal fanbase.
I give it five stars.
FINALLY
by TylerCi've been waiting for this album since i first heard The Casual Lean several years ago. Some of the most fun music I've heard in a long time...perfect to dance to, let out aggression, etc. "The Blackout" is my favorite song on the album - it shifts gears so many times, the guitars are perfect, drums are perfect, vocals are amazing. You won't find any song on this album sounding the same or as commercialized as the next. The Casual Lean are their own band and it is apparent that they make music for the sake of it being an amazing experience, much like listening to this album is for me.
