Album Review

R.L. Burnside is notorious for his gritty, greasy Delta blues, as each of his records since his 1991 discovery have been blistering electric recordings. That's what makes Acoustic Stories so refreshing. Recorded at New York City in 1988 with harp player John Neremberg, the album balances originals with a handful of well-selected covers, including three John Lee Hooker tunes: "When My First Wife Left Me," "Hobo Blues" and "Meet Me in the Bottom." Burnside is more exciting when he's electric, but these are unexpectedly haunting recordings that prove he's not just about rocking the joint.

.."I'm Gonna See My Long Haired Doney!".."You Know Somebody Been Talkin' Bout Poor Me!"..(Another great Bluesman called back home!) R.L. Burnside was finally "Gettin' Some Of His Own" when he passed; But the mighty Family Collective known as "The North Mississippi All Stars" carries on in his name! "Acoustic Stories" is a rare find; Just R.L.; his guitar & a harp player; Just like you'd hope to find in a roadside Juke Joint some steamy southern evening! "Stories" sets a relaxed vibe; With Burnside covering Blues Legends John Lee Hooker & Robert Johnson with finesse & grace! Read These Stories: Death Bell Blues; Monkey In The Pool Room; Miss Glory B & Walking Blues!-"The Real Deal!"-...by Grimmbo.
