Album Review

Unfortunately, many potential fans will breeze past the unpromising band name, generic album title and genuinely lame cover art of Guards of Metropolis' debut album. That's a shame for both band and listener, because Alligator is a crisp, intelligent, mainstream alt pop album, probably the best in that genre since Persephone's Bees' Notes from the Underworld. The most obvious point of comparison for this Portland, OR-based quartet is Garbage, who work from a similar starting point halfway between Nirvana and Blondie, although Norwegian-born lead vocalist Kristen Blix is arguably a less expressive singer than Shirley Manson. On the other hand, the Guards of Metropolis definitely have a better than average handle on the delicate balance between sweet pop hooks and sonic aggression, leaning far more towards the former than the latter. Although the sneering kiss-off "Exhole" and the Liz Phair-meets-Kelly Clarkson "Down" feature the album's strongest choruses, just about every track on Alligator sounds ready for the airwaves. There is no reason why this album couldn't be huge — other than the ones mentioned above in the first sentence. Still, this is at least going to end up one of 2007's most deserving unheard treasures.

Not normal influences = FABULOUS!!!

The "Guards of Metropolis" have so much amazing talent & a great musical heritage! The guitar player being Larry Norman's brother, & his wife, Kristin, being the lead singer, with Silver backing up on vocals, & the passion that all of these musicians have, they can't miss. The name of the band is groovy, the title of the album unique, and the entire record is an individual masterpiece on all levels. The talent in the Norman family was not limited to legendary Larry (finally done visiting this planet, & in Heaven). Charles Norman literally flows with talent, stage presence, & an uncanny authority that few musicians carry with them. Buy this record! These girls rock! This band rocks!

I had the pleasure of seeing The Guards of Metropolis in Portland, Oregon sometime back and was convinced from that very moment that this is a band destined to make it big! It's only a matter of time before their tunes are heard on airways from all parts of the globe! I'm looking forward to see what movies their music will be featured in and to see their image on the cover of Rollingstone. Rome should of had a band like this Guarding "their" Metropolis!!!!!

Don't Wanna Be Like Other Bands!

Wow. These guys are incredible. The diversity of this band and their experience with different styles of music, as well as creativity and understanding of what fans need in todays music market, makes these guys the band to watch. Check out their website and look for them on tour if you want to experience history in the making. Great record!!
