iTunes Review

John Lennon struck back in 1974 with Walls and Bridges, an album written and conceived during his 18-month “lost weekend” in Los Angeles. While the album certainly bears its scars (“Scared,” “Going Down On Love,” “Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down and Out)”), it's also typical of Lennon’s nature, a resilient album of strong musicianship and flawless execution. Even at his most personal and pained, Lennon has always maintained an impeccable, often startling, sense of professionalism. “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night,” his duet with Elton John, is a pure neurotic party anthem highlighted by the honking sax of Rolling Stones’ sideman Bobby Keys. “#9 Dream” is the requisite piece of utopian pop that Lennon mastered throughout the ‘70s, lushly orchestrated and hauntingly sad in its optimism. Add in the bitter determination of “Steel and Glass” alongside casual throwaways such as “Ya Ya,” with teenaged son Julian on drums, and the instrumental “Beef Jerky,” and there rested the self-portrait of the man until his 1980 comeback.

Good, not great, but enough good stuff to make it worth it

John Lennon himself called this LP "the work of a semi-sick craftsman." It shows as it's an inconsistent album, but the high points make it worth your time. You'll have to reach a bit more on this LP than perhaps Imagine (from 1971). However it doesn't require anywhere near as much effort to listen to this LP as Some Time in NYC (his low point from 1972) or Mind Games (1973). The highs? #9 Dream, Whatever Gets You Thru The Night, Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out, and Old Dirt Road (with Harry Nilsson). Many people disagree on what the best tunes are from this album, so consider that, too. Regardless, he was going through a lot at the time (leading him to call himself "semi-sick") and he was surprised anything came out at all, even though the LP came together very quickly for him and was very successful.
My advice? If you really dig John, buy Plastic Ono Band. That's the LP he was destined to make. Stark, brutal, raw. For most folks, however, I'd recommend Imagine to start. It's John at his most commercially accessible. Then go for Walls and Bridges. It has some great moments, some mediocre ones, and yes, some filler. Overall though, a fine LP that stands up well next to John's better work and music of the time. He produced this one and did some arranging too. It has a full, expansive sound with horns and strings on most tracks. Sadly, he arguably never approached the peaks he scaled on this LP again, which perhaps is another reason to consider it. The best material on here is the last truly great stuff John produced.

My Favorite Lennon Album

by K-Mani

This is arguably John's best album. It's my personal favorite. Each track has is engaging and enjoyable. What I love about John is that he makes all of his songs personal and he reveals something about himself in them. This is definitely a must-have for Lennon fans, even Beatles fans.

Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting — and frustrating — solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without...
