Album Review
Lots of people, celebrities and otherwise, talk a good game about their social consciences, but it's rare to find someone willing to walk the walk to the extent of Florida-based singer/songwriter Ryan Costello. In 2002, as Afghanistan was becoming a war zone amid the fall of the Taliban and the search for Osama bin Laden, Costello traveled to the country as a volunteer for a humanitarian organization, working directly with refugees uprooted by the violence. Returning to America, Costello founded the Oaks and wrote a song cycle concerning not just the war in Afghanistan, but the nature of war and its effect on humanity in general. (Not only that, but 50-percent of every album sale and download is donated to the Global Hope Network, for its programs helping the widows and orphans of Afghanistan.) Costello is only barely using poetic language to shade his meaning here: song titles include "For Hugh Thompson, Who Stood Alone (My Lai Massacre, Vietnam, 1968)" and "Survey for a Distribution of Winter Clothing" (a found sound recording of an Afghani humanitarian distribution point overlaid with limpid acoustic doodling), and the lyrics are similarly plainspoken and direct. Musically, the album is unexpectedly lovely, featuring delicate, largely acoustic alt-folk songs decorated with unexpected accents like vibes, horns, accordions, and bells, not far removed from the likes of Iron & Wine, Smog, or even the new acid folk revivalists of the Devendra Banhart stripe. There's an undeniable sense that Costello and the Oaks are preaching to the choir with Our Fathers and the Things They Left Behind: it seems unlikely that there are really that many indie rockers circa 2006 who really need to be convinced that war is not necessarily a good thing, or that those who need to be told this are likely to pick up this album. But it's a difficult record not to admire on several levels.

If you like folk and alternative
by Jaredness"the sins of my fathers" argues a compelling likeness to the vocals of sufjan stevens, and other great folk artists becoming probably one of the strongest songs on the album. Yet other songs, remind me of bands like athlete, and coldplay, giving the CD a mix of both alternative and folk rock; both great additions to each genre.
inspiring and thoughtful lyrics. this band a story to tell.
now one of my favorites.
Listen, travel, enjoy
by Far ChildThis album is truly transformative. I seek out the emerging artists that are truly musicians and preferrably have something to say, not just politcally but also about the human condition. The OaKs is exactly the type of artists that I seek. If I let myself relax while listening to this album, I am flooded with images, often not related to the lyrics, which feels even more magical. The lyrics from the heart, the ever present strong percussion (percussion being such a strong primal connection to the soul) makes this entire album a single piece of work. I actually don't experience it as separate songs, but one simply complex journey. If I had to pick the pieces that move me the most... Hugh Thompson, Message from The Moon are so touching to me. Beyond the music, I love the homage to the "album cover of old days" the artistry and care taken to make a CD case/cover that I don't want to toss aside and actually keep around makes this once vinyl owner feel the warmth and excited to open it... like opening an old Led Zepplin album. Thanks OaKs! You've given me a fresh voice that touch me at times, allow me to simply mind surf at times and still find new artists that I want to listen to at age 47!
Wonderful
by Fender32291I know the drummer in this band, and his son, they are not only awesome and monster players, but also great people with good hearts.
