Album Review
Never let it be said that Oceansize don't come up with their share of intriguing song titles. On Frames, the song titles include "Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions," "Commemorative 9/11 T-Shirt," "Trail of Fire," and "Only Twin." But then, Frames is an intriguing listen even if one doesn't speak a word of English and has no idea what any of those titles mean. In the past, some nay-sayers have tried to dismiss Oceansize as either a poor man's Radiohead or a low-rent version of Coldplay. But as Frames demonstrates, Oceansize's moody, atmospheric alternative pop/rock has many influences other than Radiohead and Coldplay. During the course of the album, the Manchester, England residents draw on a long list of influences that also includes Pink Floyd, the Police, U2, the Cocteau Twins, Roxy Music, and, of course, the Beatles. Occasionally, Frames veers a bit into alternative metal and hardcore territory, but the album's heavier, more metallic moments are the exception instead of the rule; this is a band that, all things considered, would rather float than rock. Frames is by far Oceansize's most consistent release — and it is a good place to start out if one is exploring their work for the first time.

Amazing Textural Music
by SerengetiJust to give you an idea of how good this album is, I bought the standard version of the album without the bonus song Voorhees; I'm probably going to purchase the entire album again just so I can have that song as well! Every song is absolutely awesome, but my personal favorites (at least for the time being) are "Commemorative 9/11 T-Shirt", "Unfamiliar", "Trail of Fire", and "Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions." If you're already at this page, then you have no choice but to buy this music!
Epic and Innovative, a Must Have
by kwitt11If you are new to the self-labeled "progressive death indie" quintet Oceansize, then definitely pick up 'Frames' first. Their third full-length album shows the prog innovators at their finest. It opens with "Commemorative 9/11 T-Shirt", which starts as an 11/8 piano melody and builds into an epic climax of power chords. The first track leads right into "Unfamiliar", a catchy three-guitar attack filled with irresistable guitar riffs. "Trail of Fire" begins with a soft piano riff and gradually adds the three guitars one-by-one until the song can't increase its power any further. Next comes the sweeping 'ballad' "Savant", which adds a string section (and a synth horn intro) to give a fuller sound. The fifth track, "Only Twin", is the most complex song Oceansize has ever released. It seems like each instrument is in its own time signature until they all unite into a mind-blowing climax. "An Old Friend of the Christies" is a minimalistic instrumental track that takes a while to get going, but the long wait does not disappoint. "Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions" reaches into hardcore/metal territory with its heavy guitar licks, and it's incredibly difficult to get its ending riff out of your head. The closer & title track "The Frame" reveals Oceansize's post rock influences, a fine ending for an impressive album by the most underrated band in modern rock. The bonus track "Vorhees" is put together too well to be placed in the category of other bonus tracks that are called so for a reason. 'Frames' perfectly displays all the things Oceansize have to offer, a definite must-have for anyone new to the band. Oceansize are creating a genre of their own by fusing elements from prog, post rock, metal, and indie together - a pleasant change from the traditional three-minute pop song. A band of this caliber deserves to go far and reach a larger audience.
