iTunes Review

Falling somewhere between Nora Jones and Feist, this New York City singer/songwriter creates lulling, heart wrenching tunes that could easily be fattened up and folk-rocked out. But she wisely keeps them simple and unadorned, and they demand repeated listening. Many first noticed Jaymay’s beautiful voice on the Like Bees album by Dirty on Purpose, where the title track featured her fragile and delicate vocals. Around the same time, EMI was releasing Autumn Fallin’ to quiet accolades by pop and folk fans alike. From the murmuring maracas and warm guitars on first track “Gray or Blue” to the sweetly declarative, xylephone-spiced, end-piece “You Are The Only One I Love,” succumbing to the seduction of Jaymay is all but a given. Her words are love poems: “I know the shape of your hands, because i watch ‘em when you talk;” “Now and then/I’m wishing I never/let you/let me disappear.” Whether she’s exuding the loneliness of the lovelorn as on the gorgeous “Sycamore Down” and “Autumn Fallin’” or having fun with a jazz niblet like “Hard to Say” or a Dylanesque arrangement like “You’d Rather Run,” Jaymay’s unique talent shines through on this impressive debut.

From start to end the album delivers a hearty portion of folk/indie flavor and though all of the songs stay true to the genre, they're all a little different and each uniquely interesting.
