by wisteriaOutside of Japan this is as close to hearing ko-uta from Edo Japan as you can get. Umekichi comes from a family that has a legacy of preserving traditional music and singing.
The traditional Japanese female singing voice is not for everyone. It may sound nasaly, shrill, and whiney to the ear not used to the sound of Japanese or a Japanese voice. But this was what was "in" and "hot" in Japanese teahouses in Kyoto and Edo during Japan's Edo period.
Just imagine yourself taking a ferry ride down the Sumida River on a summer's eve and you hear the lilting voice of a geisha from a teahouse's balcony. Very romantic and a must for Japanese history buffs.
