Album Review
Aloha began as a moderately abstract post-rock outfit, but there has always been a distinct pop influence even in their most cerebral efforts. Light Works, which at seven songs is just over half-an-hour, is either a short album or a really long EP, brings the band's gentle indie pop side completely to the fore: gone are the extended instrumental musings, the jazzy vibraphone solos, and the overall sense of musical connection to the softer side of the Chicago school of post-rock. In its place, Light Works offers seven sweet-and-sour chamber pop tunes built on acoustic guitars, chiming keyboards, minimal bass and percussion, and Tony Cavallario's lighter than air vocals. The Shins and Sufjan Stevens would be obvious contemporary touchstones, especially on songs as straightforward as the sweetly poppy "The End" and the gently wistful "Passengers." But the most on-the-nose comparison to the sound of Light Works is mid-period Talk Talk, circa The Colour of Spring. There's a similar sense of spaciousness to these effortlessly pretty and determinedly non-rocking tunes. The proggier end of Aloha's fan base might find Light Works distressingly insubstantial, even verging on (horrors!) "commercial," but for their last couple of albums, Aloha have slowly been moving in this more song-based and concise style anyway, so this is more of a culmination than a change of direction.

1-star reviewer does not understand a good song if it gave birth to him
by SlobesyThis is EASILY, Aloha's most accesible release to date...a little rant first...
I am going to guess that the "arson...ga" reviewer is an "indie rock connesieur" and probably like to wear beanies and hoodies when it's 90 degrees outside because it looks cool...don't forget about the jeans with a crotch cut so high up, that you can obviously tell the are cut for a girl
Now...for the music review...
At 7 songs in length, there is only a short amount of time for you to pack a punch, and hit your listeners hard. on "Light Works", Aloha does exactly that. My favorite tracks tend to be on the later part of the EP. Not to say that the first 4 songs aren't phenomenal though...
At frist listen, I was a little thrown off beacuse it is completely different from every other Aloha release...just like ano other Aloha release. No 2 albums are the same, and to me, a band that can do that consistently is a band that will be celebrated long after their demise. Aloha is a band that demands you to listen to not only the song as is, but demands that you pick apart all the parts to really understand what is going on. "Light Works" is the easiest on the brain to comprehend, and therefore, the most relateable for virgin ears to this type of music.
Well done Aloha...I'm stoked for your next LP...which I will purcahse on vinyl, like I have every other vinyl-released Aloha record.
the best band out there right now
by diodeAloha has some of the most honest music I've heard in a long time. They just make beautiful music. I've had the pleasure of seeing them live twice and they are the real deal!

by rittanyI dont LOVE this new album. I miss the Vibraphone that they had on all the other records. They had such a heavy yet soft sound, so i am a little disapointed to hear such a mellow CD, still love Aloha, but I would recommend their older stuff first.
