iTunes Review

This Athens, Georgia trio now turned duo write and perform unpretentious, straight-up pop rock that plays both tight and rough for their second album, 2008’s Mission Control. There’s more than a nod to the Replacements’ glorious raucous cacophony with their wall of guitars, and Whigs’ singer Parker Gispert emits a sandpaper growl that evokes Paul Westerbergian moments when pushed (“Hot Bed” could’ve crawled off the ‘Mats Tim release), but the Whigs also stack the guitars and harmonies like a true pop band with unabashed precision for the album’s commanding opener, “Like a Vibration.” “Sleep Sunshine” sends the group down the gauzy, psychedelic highway with slide guitars and a shuffling beat on one of the few tunes that reflects the touch of producer Rob Schnapf, who worked in similar touches with Elliot Smith and Richard Thompson. Here, Schnapf stays mostly out of the way, engineering a larger than the room sound that gives standard-issue guitar rock tunes such as “Already Young” a necessary, vibrant edge.

Ridiculously catchy.

Last spring I went the the Newport in Columbus, which hosts many great bands. I went for the Kooks, but came away with the Whigs. They were the opening band (and BETTER than the Kooks!) and played most of what I later discovered was Mission Control. These songs are catchy without losing their character; there's something about the production of the song that makes me think of them as a garage band (this is a compliment!). The songs are tight but not overly-produced and I really dig Parker's voice.

I think the main thing that struck me was how effortless the music sounds. There's almost nothing I hate more in music than listening to an album that feels like the band tried too hard. Not the case. This album was a constant on my itunes and in my car for MONTHS, and when the power of shuffle brings one of the songs up again, I'm reminded how much I love it and have to listen again.

But, if I have to critique one thing, it would be the lyrics. Not terrible, not great either, but extremely listenable! Overall this is an album with just enough catchiness and just enough rock.

This record, and this band, really good new stuff.

Check out Production City Alone. Why bash a band you haven't heard? A single listen to any of these songs and you know you got some major talent here.

Where did the other Whigs albums go?

I love this album. Just listen to the 30-second snippets from "Like A Vibration", "Right Hand On My Heart" and "Already Young". It's as if they put the best '80s pop rock (early INXS, Social Distortion, early R.E.M.) in a blender and then made it their own for the 2000s.

There's just one thing wrong: you can't get the Whigs' other works with "OK, Alright" and "Technology" on them.
And they were available on iTunes as recently as a month ago!
