Album Review

This is a pretty good 18-track collection of rarities and unreleased material. It's not recommended to newcomers who want an introduction to the band or casual listeners who want only one or two of their CDs, but Death Cab for Cutie fans should be pleased with the selection. The earliest recordings — "This Charming Man" (a cover of a Smiths song with some botched phrases such as "under this charming car"), "TV Trays," New Candidate," and "Tomorrow" — were done in November 1996. Several other tracks were recorded in May-July 1997; of these songs, "President of What," "Champagne From a Paper Cup," "Pictures in an Exhibition," "Amputations," and "Line of Best Fit" were later re-recorded for Something About Airplanes (the differences between the original and re-recorded versions aren't incredibly interesting, but the songs themselves are good and they comprise only a small part of this collection anyway). "Flustered/Hey Tomcat!" (a showcase for tape manipulation that isn't particualarly interesting) and "State Street Residential" were originally recorded in December 1997 and March 1998 respectively; both were mixed in May 2002 for this album. "Wait," a cover version of a Secret Stars song, and "Prove My Hypothesis" were released on 7" singles in 1999; both were remixed for this album. "Song for Kelly Huckably" was recorded in July 1999 (a new recording was released on the Forbidden Love EP in 2000) and the original version, "Army Corps of Architects" (which was remixed for this album), was the B-side of a Sub Pop singles club 7" in 2000. As you might expect, the overall quality of the songs isn't quite up to the standard of the best Death Cab for Cutie albums, but it comes close enough to entertain fans who aren't die-hard completists.

definitely recommend buying the whole album, but if not...

Original death cab at its finest. The album is a rather eclectic collection but is a solid buy, although I preferred having the CD with the bands' comments on the songs. If I had to pick just one song from this album that is absolutely essential for any death cab fan, it would have to be Army Corps of Architects, one of my all-time favorite songs. I fell in love with the line "I knew the years would move quickly, but never quite as fast as things. So bring your discrepancies, I'll pour the drinks." If you don't buy the album, at least get this song.

I only have a couple of words for this album...
I'M
I'N
LOVE

President of What?: The beginning bothers me a bit, but it's still a pretty good song overall. 4/5

Champagne from a Paper Cup: This has to be one of my favorites from the whole album. I'm a sucker for guitar with delay and echo. x3 5/5

Pictures In An Exhibition: It's a good song for the background music to one of those teen comedy movies. I could totally picture a bunch of teens in a car with this playing in the background. 4/5

Hindsight: The quality might be a bit odd with this one, but, to me, it just makes the song that tiny little bit better. 4/5

That's Incentive: I like how it starts off cool, and sorta relaxed, then busts out into a punk-ish rock song for a bit. Good song to get you pumped up! 5/5

Amputations: Ben's vocals are hidden by some sort of distortion, but you can still hear that high pitched voice of his that we've all grown to love. 5/5

Two Cars: Is it me, or does the beginning sound like a bunch of seagulls on steroids? XD Anywanys, The keyboard in this song is quite catchy, and goes with the song perfectly. 5/5

Line Of Best Fit: I don't know why, but I just absolutely love songs like this. I just love this song to death. It's a great song to just chill to. 10/5

This Charming Man: Wow...It's close to the original, but you can still tell that it's them. That's how a cover should be done! 4/5

TV Trays: I can definately see another band covering this at some sort of fair. It's that song that you might hear on the radio with stuff like Weezer, and all that magical stuff. 4/5

New Candles: One question... WHO THE FUDGEPOP IS SINGING THIS ONE? I KNOW that it's not Ben. Moving on... This is a pretty good song. It's quite catchy. 4/5

Tomorrow: This song barely even sounds like DCFC. It's different, but give it a chance. 4/5

Flustered / Hey Tomcat!: This is the only song that I don't like. It doesn't sound like them at all, and it doesn't fit the album at all. 2/5

State Street Residential: Good Keyboard, Good Guitar, Good Vocals, and everything else is good. x3 4/5

Wait: Apparently, this is the poupular track. I can see why. 4/5

Prove My Hypothesis: Another good song to just chill to during the night. I like what they did with the vocals (I forgot what they call it...) and it kinda seperates this song from the rest a little. 4/5

Song For Kelly Huckaby (Facts Version): This is also one of my personal favorites. I'm also a sucker for slow-ish songs. 7/5

Army Corps of Architects: THis song really reminds me of a song by The PIllows for some reason... Probably because the vocals are very similar. IT's still a good song, though. It's a very good way to end an album. 5/5
Well, there was my review. Hopefully you guys find it helpfull.

The fact that a supposed fan of Death Cab compared the sound of 'You Can Play These Songs With Chords' to Green Day is beyond me. This is original Death Cab, not that stuff you're going to hear on Narrow Stairs. Ben Gibbard does a great job on this project that ultimately sparked the formation of Death Cab for Cutie. While it includes a lot of tracks from Something About Airplanes, don't let that turn you off from purchasing--it is worth having both in your library. Most songs are demos of what was to come in Death Cabs debut album (Airplanes).
