Found his Sound

by buckyh

Pete has found his sound. Answering to the other reviews, of course he isn't Dispatch. Its takes Pete Francis, Chad Stokes, and Brad Corrigan to make Dispatch. They all contributed different things to Dispatch and here is simply Pete Francis, unimpeded by the creative likes of Chad and Brad. Unfortuinately, this is not his best album. I do believe though that Pete is settling down and has found his sound. To me, there are no real standout songs on this album. But they all would hold thier own against some of the pop we are entrenched in today from the radio. I give it 4 stars, because as it is not the best I have heard, it IS a beautiful album.
Hope this helped!

Well... he's no Dispatch...

I'm a massive Dispatch fan. They are one of my all time favorite bands, so naturally I've followed all three members post Dispatch and bought anything they have produced since breaking up. Generally speaking I have enjoyed all of it, State Radio probably being the tightest project any of the three have worked on, but nothing comes close to Dispatch in their hayday... this record obviously included.

Pete has a good voice, creates pleasant songs (Burning the River on So They Say is excellent) however his hippy-dippy lyrics get old. At his best... Carry You, Burning the River, During the Storm... he is cognisant and combined with his great voice and solid riff work creates good to very good songs. Then he writes something like this from "Stars Over the Country".

"Rain setting off new rings
Planets bubbling in a cool drink
Spinning in the electric dark, I stop to think
It's what you make, a coffin like a chocolate cake
The insects are the architects of the luscious world"

Interesting? Sure. Good writing? Hardly. In fact it borders on the nonsensical. Thus continues the saga of Pete Francis. On the whole this album is solid, though I still prefer So They Say overall, regardless of some rather cheesy efforts thrown in between some greats. If you enjoyed his previous work, buy this album. If you are looking for the next Dispatch, the closest you are going to get is State Radio. Reccomended.
