iTunes Review

This alt-country quartet’s seventh studio album and first in four years, 2008’s Blame it On Gravity, is the sound of a band fully recharged and ready for the road. Though two members live on opposite coasts and main songwriter Rhett Miller has been working up a solo career with two worthy solo albums, the originally Dallas-based Old 97’s integrate their interests in power pop’s energy and country music’s lonesome sweepings with a studio’s worthy polish and a live band’s perceptible energy. While tunes such as “The Fool,” “No Baby I” and “Early Morning“ kick back with the band’s recognizable cowpunk bounce, the album also contains several welcome surprises. “She Loves the Sunset” recalls the laid-back acoustic ambitions and earnest sentiments of Jonathan Richman. “This Beautiful Thing,” with its jangling midtempo and smooth harmonies, and the wistful “Color of a Lonely Heart is Blue,” both written by bassist Murry Hammond, add a welcome counterpoint to Miller’s jaunty excursions (“I Will Remain,” “The Easy Way”), maintaining the group’s unusual assured range.

Great album

The Old 97's at their best. Buy the record and turn it up real loud on some good speakers (*not* laptop speakers or headphones!). Listen from start to finish and then do it again. There's no arguing with a record that can go from "The Fool" to "The Color of a Lonely Heart."

Great Discovery Thanks to Terri Gross!

I hadn't heard this band until Rhett Miller was recently on Fresh Air. He sang a number of tunes in the studio and I was hooked. As soon as I got home I downloaded the album here at iTunes and I think it's terrific. Can't compare it to past albums, but I will say I've enjoyed it enough to want the backlist, for sure, and when the Old 97s perform anywhere nearby, I'll certainly try to attend. Thanks guys. It's great to have some new music to listen to!

Welcome Back to the Old 97's...

They've been gone too long. A great jump back into the deep end of the alt-country pool. A little more "country" than recent efforts, which is a welcome development for some. Rhett and the boys save the strongest for last with "The One" -- is it about a band? A bank robbery? Both? Who knows, but it rocks. "Here's to the Halcyon" is also a terrific nod to the songwriter-storyteller tradition of Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen and Joe Ely. A great effort overall.

Although they became one of the most enduring bands in the alternative country-rock catalog, Old 97's drew inspiration from a wider range of sources, from the twangy stomp of cowpunk to the melodic craft of power pop. Formed in 1993 by frontman Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond, the group spent...
