Not a souvenir, but a treasure
by BillK51I saw one reviewer who said that compared to the already existing albums of the original cast and film, this recording of South Pacific did not measure up and would serve only as a souvenir to those who had seen the show.
Very, very wrong. No apologies must be made for a recording of a revival that received the best reviews that I have ever seen and had all principals nominated for the Tony award. I would grant you that Enzio Pinza's rendition of signature song 'Some Enchanged Evening' may be untouchable, but otherwise he gives nothing away to Tony winner Paulo Szot, who brought me to tears singing the dramatic climax 'This Nearly Was Mine.'
This recording has a great advantage in the added length of the CD over the old vinyl record. There is the full overture, 2 minutes longer, and the between acts orchestral music. Full versions of the songs, reprises of songs and critical dialog are included. A small but charming number sung by Lt. Cable and Nellie is on there and no where else.
I saw the show the first week that Kelli O'Hara returned from her pregnancy leave. I felt very fortunate to be able to see South Pacific with the original cast (except for Mathew Morrison) intact after it had already been running for a year and a half. To make it more special, I had a front row center seat.
According to a recent interview with Kelli O'Hara on "Broadway Buzz" website, she and Paulo will both be leaving the show on January 3rd. This is no longer a difficult ticket to get and if you are any kind of a Broadway lover you should run to see the show before then.
South Pacific is a hit in America!

Great performances
by JM - PAA great album and an even better show !!!!!!!!! I thought "Some Enchanted Evening" was going to be great and it was. However, Paulo Szot totally blew away the audience with "This Nearly Was Mine". You could hear an audible gasp from the audience when he finished this song, it was that good !! It was not my favorite before the show, but it alone is worth the price of admission. The rest of the cast is excellent but Paolo Szot is rare theatrical gem. See it if you possibly can.
