Classic pop-rock songs, tasty guitar work...great album!
by Badlands BoyThis is a great album. It’s one of those rare things in the current world of music…a collection of really good songs! With his debut album, Philip Vandermost has established a distinctive musical voice and vision. This is rock music with a pop songwriting sensibility. Back in the day when popular radio played well-crafted pop songs by people who could actually play and sing, many of these songs would have been hits. At a brisk 30 minutes, this album rushes by before you have a chance to savor it, but that’s part of it’s charm. The songs are short and to the point, with instrumentation that supports them without getting in the way of them. The production is crisp and clean, letting the instruments breathe, especially the tasty guitar work throughout. Like Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, Vandermost uses his considerable guitar skills as a tool to present his musical vision, not as a vehicle to show off. The title track is an interesting guitar instrumental that floats along dreamily until it suddenly slams into “Speak To Me”, a balls-out rocker in the vein of Oasis and T-Rex.
“So Hi” is a tale of love and devotion set to a huge guitar riff. As each song follows the next, there’s a cohesiveness in the sound and songwriting that makes the album ebb and flow, taking the listener on a smooth ride. “Since Mountains Have Risen” starts off as on acoustic ditty that explodes into a U2-esque anthem. Lyrically, most of the album concerns the redemptive power of love, the power to “….light the way from wrong to right…”, as it says in “Time After Time”. My favorite song on the album is the closer, “Drifting”, an earthy, rocking anthem with some great guitar fireworks at the end. It ends the album on a hopeful, ecstatic note. It’s a song about going on a journey, but it might have been more fitting as an opener, because at this point, Vandermost has already taken you on one.
Great Album!!
by indie rock rulesMy musical interests range from alt rock to brit pop to alt country & bluegrass, and i appreciate how this album has such a nice range of sounds. one can hear traces of influences of Peter Gabriel, Coldplay, U2, John Mayer...which is certainly my wheelhouse...but this is a thoroughly original musical statement and, to top it all off, also features thought-provoking lyrics. Definitely recommended!
