Get the whole album!
by LoudenClear1144Can't remember the last album I got. Heard a song on the radio, bought it, bought another then just caved and bought the whole thing. One catchy song after another that builds into something greater than the sum of it's parts. This is one of those records that takes a big bite and swallows it whole.
A Musical Tour de Force through Los Angeles
by Slackjaw108This LA-centric collection makes no bones about its cinematic aspirations—the opening tune starts with the sound of a film reel—and the conceit works for the most part."The Big Pretend" here is SoCal's answer to "The Big Easy" and, like both cities, there's plenty here to keep a listener interested. Lyrically, there's clever Costello-inspired punning (and vocal phrasing) throughout but also clunkers like "one man's reject is another's object of desire". Um, yeah.
The strengths here lie in the variety of the songs (everything from disco to cabaret and hard rock) which are well-written with more hooks than a serial killer's basement, and the ballsy conviction of the singer. The band plays like their lives depend on it too—with taste, finesse, and aggression, they deliver whatever the song calls for. The Rundgren-esque "Santa Ana" contains just one of the many references to Los Angeles life that abound here, both geographically and thematically. For sheer scope and ambition, this album is hard to beat and you'll have fun with the wordplay and engaging melodies. Recommended.
Finally!
by Papa BonaireIt's been too long since the first record. Wow, they sound like they've learned some new tricks but still have the same sensibilities. Must listen several times for a full evaluation...
