iTunes Review

It took George Strait nearly 20 years to release an eponymous album, and he marks the occasion with a collection of gentle, folk-based tearjerkers. Windows and rain are the recurring images here as Strait describes with simple detail stories of separation and pain in “If You Can Do Anything Else” and “If It’s Gonna Rain.” Whereas male country singers often turn to self-loathing and resentment in their love songs, Strait always plays the victim as one humble and faithful. Witness the opening lines of “Lookin’ Out My Window Through the Pain”: “I watched from my window as she slipped from the house / Once again she's leaving, but Lord, she's not to blame / This morning a memory phoned her and he's a habit she can't break / So 'til she returns, I'll wait for her, looking out my window through the pain.” To keep the album from becoming a total heartbreaker, Strait mixes it up with the rowdily amusing “Home Improvement” and “Don’t Make Me Come Over There and Love You.” Capping things off is “You’re Stronger Than Me,” a Hank Cochran tune with a classic chorus and a Bakersfield swing befitting Buck Owens.

A Nice George Strait Album

This CD is not one of George's best, but its not bad because George has such a great voice and he delivers even the weaker songs with sincerity. What keeps this CD from being a great CD is not George's singing, its not the production or musicianship, and its not the melodies. All are top notch. But, the lyrics here are not so great. Too many corny cliches and puns (e.g., "Looking out my window through the pain" is the title to one song and "Go On" includes the line "what don't kill us only makes us strong," a cliche if there ever was one; "If you can do anything else" is lazy lyric writing -- e.g., the singer tells his lover that she could live in houston, dallas, new york, seattle, et cetera, or with him!. Its supposed to be a love song but it sounds more like a list of cities). Finally, there is "Don't Make Me Come Over There..." which sounds like a retread of "We Really Shouldnt Be Doing This," but with less interesting lyrics.

So, George's voice saves the day here. Were any other artist to release these songs, the result would be dreadful. But in George's hands these weak songs actually sound pretty good.

Out of all the new country singers to emerge in the early '80s, George Strait stayed the closest to traditional country. Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn't refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them for a new decade. In the process, he became one of the...
