iTunes Review
The sweet-toned, full-bodied voice of Mama Cass Elliot was a defining component of the Mamas and the Papas’ folk-pop sound. After the group’s break-up in 1968, she launched herself as a solo artist with moderate success. Mama’s Big Ones features hits from her tenure with her old group along with solo singles and album tracks. While some of these tunes seem like stale bubblegum today, the hippie idealism and melodic buoyancy of the best songs are still fun to experience. Of particular note are two Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil tunes, “Make Your Own Kind Of Music” and “It’s Getting Better” — these ultra-catchy odes to personal integrity and slow-building romance are absolutely lovable. “New World Coming” (a bouncy expression of early ‘70s optimism) and “The Good Times Are Coming” (a hopeless dreamer’s credo) are nearly as good. The Mamas and the Papas tracks — “Words Of Love” and “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” — bring out her vaudevillian side. Mama’s Big Ones preserves the strongest moments from this gifted artist’s fitfully inspired career.

A Mama for all time!
by Old FolksterI grew up listening to Mama Cass, and love every song on this album. But I will say, I hadn't thought of it much until "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and "It's Getting Better" showed up on LOST. Same goes for Petula Clark singing "Downtown" (which is Juliette's themes.) These songs sound as fresh and upbeat today as they did 30-40 years ago,-such is the strength of pop music from that era, and no one did it better than Mama Cass Elliot. As an aside, if you like her voice, check out Nicole Atkins' "Neptune City." Atkins is the closest thing we have in the modern music scene to Cass, and she's pretty compelling too.
lost and found
by sauget.diblosiomy mom had cass elliot's records when i was a kid and she listened to them all the time. so when the lost second season premier opened brilliantly with 'make your own kind of music', all that came rushing back to me. i hadn't thought about those songs in decades.
anyway, these tunes really hold up, and man, did cass have a great voice.
and whoever came up with the idea of using 'make your own kind of music' on lost is a genius. who would have ever guessed that after waiting a whole summer to find out what was inside that damn hatch, we would hear mama cass blasting through the corridors.
Great stuff
by Other4815I had never her of Mama Cass before LOST. But when I first heard her song "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" on the season 2 premier, I loved it. Then when they played "It's Getting Better" I got got music for my iPod. Great music and thanks to the writers of LOST for having her in her show. LOST has lots of other great music that I have never heard of. In, summery buy this album. (and go watch LOST for more great music!)
