The One And Only

by K.G.F.

For me, this music written and performed by Gershwin and his contemporaries is the last "note" on the subject. I've heard a good many modern versions of this work, but interpretations are interpretations. The preludes, for instance, could never be played better than what is to be found here. Imagine a painter making a copy of a painting by Van Gogh and asking, "which one do you like better?"

I thank G-d that these recordings exist, they are a true national treasure. The same goes for Gershwin's piano roll versions of Rhapsody and American, (not the Nonesuch issue which sounds too mechanical) they are a joy.

To Mr. Carnegie07, here are my credentials: I like listening to great music.

Good, but not great.

I peronally have performed Rhapsody in Blue in Carnegie Hall, New York. That was phenomenal. I've heard it performed in Henry Segerstorm Hall in Orange County and the piano was played by a man who won his masters degree in Piano Performance from the Julliard Conservatory of Music. I have recordings of both of these performances and I must say, the quality of the orchestra in the pieces I've heard on this album leave a lot wanting. The piano sounds great and it is a piano solo piece, but to overlook the over-all sound of the orchestra is to overlook half of Gershwin's finest masterpiece. I'm disappointed.

And those who would attack me, give me your credentials first. That way, I'll know whether to listen or laugh.

Rhapsody in Blue

If America had a theme song, this would be it. It captures the cockiness and confidence that our nation had in the 1920's following a World War and as we ushered in the jazz age. Great song.

In a career tragically cut short in mid-stride by a brain tumor, George Gershwin (1898-1937) proved himself to be not only one of the great songwriters of his extremely rich era, but also a gifted "serious" composer who bridged the worlds of classical and popular music. The latter is all the more striking,...
