Album Review

With their moody alt-rock sound, it might be tempting to lump this quintet in with British bands like Coldplay and Travis, who rushed to fill the void when Radiohead turned its back on commercial accessibility. But one listen to the Manchester-based band's sophomore LP makes it clear that they're charting a rockier course, with prog influences that run the gamut from Pink Floyd to Tool. The throbbing tribal pulse of "The Charm Offensive" recalls Jane's Addiction if they'd been fronted by Layne Staley, with stilted rhythms, shoegazing guitars, and harmonized vocals used to craft an arty epic that straddles the line dividing art rock and metal. They have an obvious understanding of the power of dynamics: "A Homage to a Shame" cranks up the distortion for a stutter-stepping, neck-snapping groove clearly designed to incite mosh pit ferocity, and then "Meredith" abandons that intensity in favor of melody, featuring a sultry beat topped with trippy layers of shimmering guitars and echoing vocals. But what's missing from Oceansize's sound is the sort of memorable lyrical or melodic hooks listeners can latch onto. The result is a pleasant enough ride for those in search of an occasionally transcendent aural experience.

Always a good listen... never gets old.

I love this album. Intricate, delicate, and yet raw and powerful. The first 3 or so listens I thought it was good but it grows and then keeps growing on a person. Where's the next one guys??!

A melting pot of musical goodness!

Oceansize have managed to combine all the realy cool elements of music. A bit of mid-nineties shoegazer and alternative rock combined with a sort-of Post Rock sensibility. At times the songs are quite and hypnotic... and then launch into big heavy guitar riffs and pounding drums. All the while, the vocals keep a nice emotional/melodic feel to them ( even when in scream-mode ) These guys have definitely carved out a nice little niche for themselves: More inteligent than your average radio-oriented band while a bit more focused/song oriented than a lot of the art rock/post rock stuff. A very nice middleground.

Hell ya!!!!!!

The Music I've been Waiting my life for. I love this style of dark alternative. This music reminds me of the Hidden tracks on most 90's alternative Albums. I highly recommed it all!!
I hear a Influence from the band "FAILURE" and "SHINER"!!

Oceansize were one of numerous British bands crafting epic, moody soundscapes in the post-Radiohead era. However, they couldn't be pigeonholed as a Coldplay/Travis clone; their influences ran the gamut from space rock old (Pink Floyd) and new (Mogwai, the Verve) to alternative metal (Jane's Addiction,...
