iTunes Review

There are almost as many album tracks here that never garnered the charting success of the epic serenade "Wichita Lineman" or the endearingly melodramatic "Galveston," but what stands clear is perhaps the most important point of this collection: Glen Campbell was the archetypal countrypolitan singer. His honeyed vocal timbre and flawless phrasing perfectly matched all the lush orchestral trappings of the genre, as well as the song selections that complete the musical chemistry like a puzzle piece. Similar to the aforementioned Jimmy Webb tunes, Campbell's moving version of "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" proves that Webb and Campbell were the chocolate and peanut butter of the Nashville sound. His duets with Bobbie Gentry were a stellar match as evidenced by their haunting rendition of "Scarborough Fair / Canticle." Campbell also adapted confidently with timely trends. He turns Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" and Larry Weiss' "Rhinestone Cowboy" into urban cowboy staples and he tackled Dylan's "If Not For You" with George Harrison-esque aspirations and "Mr. Tambourine Man" with an instrumental Byrdsian go-go flare.

This CDs brings Glen Campbell's vocal talents as a country singer, balladeer, and pop rock artist together in one compilation successfully. His voice tone alternates with each change of musical genre so as to give the listener the full range of his talents.I have always been a fan of his and only wish the rendering of "King of the Road " had been vocal rather than instrumental. That song and his vocal rendition of it is unforgetable.

Beautiful trip back to the early days of the "70's that will stimulate tears in the eyes of the old crowd and open the eyes of the young as they are introduced to songs where you can hum the tunes and actually understand the words!

It isn't accurate to call Glen Campbell "pure country," but his smooth fusion of country mannerisms and pop melodies and production techniques made him one of the most popular country musicians of the late '60s and '70s. Campbell was one of the leading figures of country-pop during that era, racking...
