Album Review

When the Norwegian production duo Röyksopp dropped their first album, Melody A.M., it sounded as though they were on a stopover from another planet. Otherworldly samples and a crisp production sense combined to make the singles "Eple" and "Sparks" perfect examples of the downbeat form and near-ubiquitous inclusions on chillout compilations. As electronica artists from Biosphere to Boards of Canada had proved before them, a life away from the mainstream — say, in the extreme northern climes of Europe — is capable of freeing an artist from the demands of trendiness. Their second album, The Understanding, reveals a different focus — fascination with all manner of radio-ready European pop. Yes, Röyksopp is all grown up now. In their quest for maturity (as well as the ears of busy shoppers all over the Northern Hemisphere), the duo changed their distinctive sound in the process. The single "Only This Moment," a post-connubial duet between male and female, could perhaps have heralded the comeback of a middle-aged Aqua, while on "49 Percent" the duo struggle to emulate Underworld's "Pearls' Girl" (while a bewitching vocal from Chelonis R. Jones rescues them from the brink). Nods to synth pop (Depeche Mode, Soft Cell) and disco (Moroder) simply accentuate the mood that Röyksopp have little left to say aside from what others have said more clearly in the past.

I liked this album better than there first album. This is the first album they have all most all the song with vocals. Its alot different than the first album, one example is the sounds. This album is probably a must have for Royksopp fans.

Worth the purchase!

I would say i'm a casual fan of Royksopp's during the Melody A.M. phase in their career, but after this album, I can say I'm a big fan! I liked the first single "only this moment" and was instantly hooked. The rest of the album didn't really meet up to the same pace as that single, so I didn't listen to the rest of the album much. As time progressed, I began listening to more of their stuff and liking it, only realizing it was on this album (that i didn't give much time). After becoming addicted to "Someone Like Me" (which is fun to blast with the bass up on high) and "Beautiful Day Without You", I came to realize that there is a lot more depth to their melodies within the songs and that a lot of time and effort went into making this. Layers upon layers upon layers... This is definately one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Anyone still questioning this purchase should ignore the samples on iTunes and go onto YOUTUBE and watch the music videos for this album. GREAT STUFF!! GOOD JOB GUYS!!! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM DUE OUT IN MARCH!!

Just about perfect!

This is definitely one of my favorite albums I've heard. Röyksopp changed their style up a bit, and in a good way. Melody A.M. was a great release, but Understanding had much more flavor, and more of a fresh electro vibe that you can bob your head to. The tracks that stand out are Only This moment, 49%, Beautiful Day Without You, What Else is There, and most definitely - Circuit Breaker. It may take some getting used to this album, but it is definitely their greatest release

Biography

Formed: Bergen, Norway

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s

Norwegian duo Röyksopp compensated for the cold climes of their native Tromsø by making some of the warmest, most inviting downbeat electronica of the new millennium, exemplified by early singles like Eple and Poor Leno. The pair, Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge, both grew up in Tromsø and began...
