iTunes Review

Though it garnered little attention at the time – thousands of albums are released each year to an indifferent public – David Gray’s debut album was an emotional time-bomb awaiting someone to light its fuse and send it into the public square. From the opening chords of “Shine” to the finality of “It’s All Over,” A Century Ends is the work of a young artist finding his voice amongst an abundant love for his fellow singer-songwriters and his own yearning, romantic soul. He has the unquestionable conviction of youth on his side and its optimism is spine-chilling. “Gathering Dust,” the album’s finest cut, recalls Van Morrison in its sweeping, open strummed chords, its loose improvisational vocal tangents, and its restless wandering spirit. “Wisdom” is the nearest Gray comes to convention here, with its grand chorus and use of a traditional rock arrangement. Mostly, he sits with his acoustic guitar and lets his thoughts ramble. Delivered in a raspy Welsh accent that would be finessed in later recordings, the songs (the title track, “Lead Me Upstairs”) have a palpable urgency that enhances their bare arrangements.

Best David Gray Album

by Guinness_

I have every David Gray album/song available for download anywhere, and yet this CD is my favorite of all. This album has a raw almost harsh tone to it and doesn't rely on dramatically produced background overlays, but instead focuses on David's vocal talents and excellent storyline lyrics. Gathering Dust will go down as my favorite David Gray song of all time, slightly ahead of his flagship song, Shine. If you're looking for an amazing singer/songwriter with unmatched acoustic talents, then look no further...

The Original and Still the Best

I heard a track off this album on Rock Over London on a cold Sunday morning in '93...next day went straight to my local Strawberry's and had them order me a cassette on import - ended up as my favorite album of the decade, no question. This album is all about David Gray's guitar, his voice, and his songwriting...none of the slick production chords that have made most of his later stuff so sappy. It's raw and brilliant - a young kid with the voice of a guy who's seen it all, and the poetic skill of a Dylan. It'll get under your skin for days and weeks. I've always been happy that David Gray "made it", but always been disappointed that he's never returned to this unadorned, primal, authentic acoustic sound. Pick this album up - it will show you a side to David Gray that you never suspected.

A Good Early Start

Though I am a fan of David Gray, I found this album to be a bit harsh and twangy. You can really hear how his voice matured in his later work. Also it is an acoustic album, which is a much more difficult task. If you're a die hard fan, definitely get this album.
