iTunes Review

The album cover’s rose of the same name ended up a perennial Dead trademark, but more to the point is how American Beauty’s title sums up its ethos. After capturing its freewheeling impulses on the likes of Anthem of the Sun and Live/Dead, the band reeled it all in for a controlled cohesion that allowed the players to nail down what might be their most gorgeous album. (Its acoustic instrumentation recalls nothing so much as the Band’s then-recent self-titled set.) “Box of Rain” and “Ripple” were philosophical gems whose reassurances went far beyond hippie talk; the latter’s play with blues and gospel iconography put the song at nice odds with the Dead’s outlaw mythos. Elsewhere, there’s praise for a “Sugar Magnolia” who “pays my ticket when I speed,” and the eternal “Truckin’,” a strong bemused glance at the road life and its hazards. The remastered sound reveals one of the most crisply recorded outfits of its era.

GREAT ALBUM!!! Almost Album of the decade. The thing that makes me sad about this one is how criminally overlooked Operator is. In my opinion it is the best song on the album. I think it is overlooked because of all these major singles on it. Check out operator, great song.

My Favorite Album Of All Time!!

I realize my title is a bold statement, but it is true. I can honestly say that this is the best album of all time, in my opinion. I don't think I've listened to a single other album as much as this album. From start to finish, excellent. Starting with Box of Rain, a song of a young man (Phil Lesh) slowly watching his father die, to "Friend of the Devil" the song that really is the outlaw in all of us. "Sugar Mag", the song about the best girl you've ever had. Do I really need to go on?? These are the songs of our lives!! I've owned this album in every format except reel to reel. If you don't have it, get it. This album is like a best friend!!

Let There Be Songs To Fill The Air

Euphonic. Masterful. Gorgeous. Timeless. All words that are synonyms to American Beauty by The Grateful Dead. This album is the reason I have a tattoo of the Owsley Dancing Bear on my back. It's also the reason I have been in a long-lasting relationship, four years with no gaps. And it's also the reason I started to collect vinyls. Whenever sadness, anger, happiness, love, or just about any imagineable emotion, come over me, I go to American Beauty. I think that if every person in the world had a copy of this album, therapists would be out of work. "Ripple" is one of my favorite songs of all time. Robert Hunter, songwriter for The Dead, was and is a genius. He knows how to make me feel emotion even when I try not to feel it. If you are a DeadHead such as myself, you know what I'm talking about. If you are not, listen to this album and it won't be long before you are referencing lines from their songs in everyday conversation. "Brokedown Palace" is the perfect going away song. Makes me feel like I'm missing something so much more amazing in a more beautiful place. One word. Eight letters. Two syllables. FLAWLESS.
