iTunes Review

Before Roberta Flack became a big star killing everyone softly with her songs, she quietly blew the doors off small clubs as a jazz, gospel, and blues singer. She combined the spirituality of Mahalia Jackson, the soulfulness of Nina Simone, and purity of Judy Collins. First Take, Flack's 1969 debut, is a powerful testament to her astonishing vocal skills. Raw and understated, it's more folky-jazz than soul, with John Pizzarelli on guitar and Ron Carter on bass cushioning Flack's low-key piano and blissful, introspective singing. From start to finish, a simply gorgeous album.

I've never heard better.

This is my favorite album and has been for years. It always stops me dead in my tracks ... if I happen upon a track from it late at night then I'm probably not going to bed until I have heard the whole thing. It's incredible.

An Unforgettable Music Experience

by C.al

I first heard this album in 1972. I was 22 years old and I went to a cove on the beach with a woman about 5 years my senior. I set my speakers on top of my car and she put in this 8-track. It has haunted me ever since. I was fresh out of Viet-Nam and really into the message music of the period. I knew that music could stir me to anger over current injustices, but I was not prepared for the passion that this album ignited in me. This is more than a musical composition, it is a rite of passage. It is a spiritual journey into the essence of music. You cannot truly appreciate
the power of music until you have experienced this album. It will change your life.

Under appreciated treasure

Man....this LP, 8 Track, Cassette, CD, Digital Download..whatever delivery method we are talking about, is unquestionably one of the best pieces of work ever delivered by an artist. I was 8 years old when this came out, and it is still as beautiful today as it was back when I first heard my mother play it. If you like great music, buy this.

Classy, urbane, reserved, smooth, and sophisticated — all of these terms have been used to describe the music of Roberta Flack, particularly her string of romantic, light jazz ballad hits in the 1970s, which continue to enjoy popularity on MOR-oriented adult contemporary stations. Flack was the...
