strange but great.

Some of the best experimental avant-garde music there is to be heard..
by Lumsden20It's a shame that very few people even knew this existed. Kayo Dot certainly isn't the most mainstream of bands as is, and I guess it's to be expected that a solo project from the band wouldn't be very popular either.
In any case, this album consists of 4 intelligently composed musical pieces, each with their own little quirk. Kandu vs Corky features the bell-shaped rhythms and scary atmosphere, while "The Lugubrious..." features the concept of one instrument being played by two people (even vocals).
Eptaceros is probably the most straightforward song on here, but it's still far from generic. The song has some great experimentation with strange sounds that a trumpet can make.
They only point at which this album really falters is in "Brown Light Upon Us", as the song seems to have decreased dynamics, and the sound seems to blend together too much. The premise is a very inventive one, but in the end, it doesn't quite live up to it. It's still a great song, nonetheless.
As a disclaimer, if you're not a fan of Kayo Dot, maudlin of the Well, or experimental music in general, you probably won't like this.
But you never know, so give it a listen. And if you like it, BUY it.

by Half TonIf you're a fan of maudlin of the Well or Kayo Dot, this is a must have. If you're a fan of good, diverse music, this is a must have. If you are closed minded and only listen to your radio, this is, unfortunately, not for you. This is unaccessable brilliance at it's finest.
