...And Then There Were Zero
by ken6644Calling ...And Then There Were Zero electronic is a bit misleading. Although it's true that the music was composed on a laptop, songwriter Daemon Hatfield plays all the guitar parts & sings all the vocals. The music is more reminiscent of Beck with lots of heavy guitars, keyboards, electronic effects & a definite retro '80s feel to many of the songs. Percussionist Lindsay Williams helps give a nice live kick to several of the tracks. But what I like best about the album is that none of the songs sound the same, ranging from beautiful acoustic gems to hard & heavy garage rock. Stand-out tracks include the aching sad & sweet "Photograph, " written about his grandfather, the primal screamer "You're Not Alive" (think John Lennon's "Mother") & the in-your-face anthemic "Or So You Think."
A Pleasant Departure
by krazykarl235A big step forward in progressive rock music, Monster-0 skillfully combines slick guitar riffs with 1980's synthetic sounds for an album that is more than just a little off the beaten path. “…And then There Were Zero” was put together by the two-member band for a low budget but the sound is surprisingly full, especially for their first full-length album. Additionally, while the group certainly has a distinct and consistent sound, the songs on the album vary in feel and topic enough for several listens without being predictable. The band demonstrates their ability to play a good mix of electronica and punk rock with themes revolving around apathy, lust and isolation. However, what stands out the most is the consistent feeling of youthful vigor throughout the tracks that matches the energy of the decade that clearly inspired their sound. This CD is a unique and refreshing departure from the mainstream, but simultaneously manages to feel pleasantly familiar.
