iTunes Review

During the ‘70s, even the Beach Boys started to wean from Brian Wilson's good-time tunes for the darker gospel-influenced visions of Dennis Wilson as evidenced by the songs on this underrated twofer (notably the melancholy "Cuddle Up"). Ironically, after suffering a hand injury, Dennis was replaced in 1972 with drummer Ricky Fataar from the London power pop band the Flame. He imported fellow band mate Blondie Chaplin on third guitar. The two newbies were allowed to write (and sing lead on) a few songs like "Here She Comes" and "Hold On, Dear Brother," which unsurprisingly sound a lot like the Flame with their soulful harmonies, barbed hooks and Beatlesque guitars. "He Come Down" and "Marcella" were the only Brian Wilson-penned songs on So Tough (the latter being the standout). Holland opens with Chaplin approximating more of a Beach-Boy vocal style on the catchy "Sail On, Sailor." Fataar and Chaplin delivered another Flame-tinged song in "Leaving This Town." Mike Love's vocal performance on "California Saga (California)" is the only vestige here of the band's bygone boyish West Coast hymns.

"Holland" is perfect

by Dr. Bruce

I don't know nuthin' about Carl and the Passions -- I only know that "Holland" is my favorite album from the 70s (this, and "Nilsson Schmilsson"), and it's rich with sonic experiments and the renowned Beach Boys' harmonies. Try to listen to "Only With You" without a thought toward your last big breakup; or not singing along to "The Trader"; or not thinking that "Funky Pretty" is one of the best songs you've ever heard, at any time, in any place. On a recent road trip from San Diego to Washington state, I played this album on my iPod over and over -- nothing else could have defined the experience better. The "California Saga" triptych is an elegant, elegiac attestation to California's splendors. You should be so lucky as I was hearing, grooving to, and loving this album as much as I and my family did on that road trip!

Perfect albums

As far as I'm concerned, every song on both of these albums (Including Brian's "Mount Vernon and Fairway") is perfect in every way. Fans, you need these, trust me.

Cool!

I like tracks 1, 7, 8, 9, 13, and 14. "He Come Down" is gospel-y; a bit too gospel-y. "Sail on sailor"--although it's a bit bluesy-- is very uplifting for me. ("Never caring/Perservering/Sail on, sail on, sailor") Mt. Vernon & Fairway is a pretty good bedtime story. OMG I LOVE "THE TRADER!!!!" It reallymakes me think about things..........I'm sorry, what was I talking about?
Anyway, if you like this album, I reccomend...more Beach Boys' stuff.
