Is This Willie? Is This iTunes?
by RScut2ndI have been a big fan of Willie Nelson for a long, long time and really enjoy his music. But, I am not a big fan of hearing "the F word" in my music or mixed company. If you buy this tune please be aware and do not proudly (and unknowingly) play your new selection for the first time for your wife and kids unless they too like hearing "the big one" - I did [play it], they didn't [like the F word]. Also, although the song itself is pure Willie, I wasn't impressed about the subject matter - gay cowboys. I've never deleted an iTunes selection before, but I did this one. Had iTunes marked this as "Explicit" as they often do, I might have been a little more careful. I rarely regret my iTunes choices, but I wish I hadn't wasted a free credit on this.
So get the story straight, okay?
by djbbjdThe song is written by Ned Sublette. For a good background, see the Wikipedia research.
My one star is for the fact that I don't care for the song. Willie Nelson can do what he wants and think what he wants. I approached my review from knowing Ned Sublette's work and don't care for the song.
I understand a bit of where Sublette is coming from, I think, as I experienced the early eighties similarly. This is just a quirky song he wrote, which some guy from the SNL band eventually passed on to WN, probably in a humorous context. Nelson thought it was funny and when the opportunity presented itself in form of the Brokeback movie, found the perfect opportunity to use the song, which again he thought was hilarious. There you go. That's the basic background.
Funny to see so many people getting emotional about it. Maybe some of you will become acquainted with some of Sublette's other works--like his books, for example. Havana, Cubans frequently entertain those who are passing through.
classic Willie!
by *JeRSpiZZA*good ol Willie writing, the song gets to the point with Nelsons lyrical mind.
