Tiny Ball of Pure Enthusiasm
by Dr. Winston O'BoogieMy title, to me at least, sums up not only April's personality but her presence at the center of each of her songs. She cannot be denied!! I cant forget one night at The Saint, having shown up to see her set an leave, being told by everyone to stick around for this band The Gay Blades. I stubbornly refused them all. But once I make my way to April, I go from "Ill stick around for one song" to following her as she bustles her tiny little self right through the crowd to get a good spot at the front. She told me I had to stay for the whole set, so I did. I never feel bad about showing off her achievements to friends. I know I do it because Ive known her for a good chunk of her life/career and Im proud of her. I used to own the homemade demo that JW Experiment was on. I used to joke it was about me since those are my initials. But no, she had her Eric even then and after all these years, the girl's got the rock on...literally.
So what does this all have to do with the album? As a fellow songwriter/rocknrolla, I can only live vicariously through Miss April. She has always put herself and her name right up front. She leads with the sweet and unassuming presence then wallops with that voice. She never blended in or dissolved into a lineup. My old band played with her on several occasions and no one could forget her voice. The fact that she remains a fan of a few of my songs is one of the greatest honors I hold close to my heart.
Buy this CD. Buy her Live From The Penthouse. Give yourself over to April. You'll have no choice once you let these tunes in. Im a bit partial to Bright White Jackets but that's only because if they really do still come for people, Im on the list. So, in closing, whether it be the obvious sultry siren appeal or the deeper roots of Jeff Buckley and The Andrews Sisters, April Smith belongs way ahead of the prefabs making plenty of dough doing a poor imitation of what flows naturally from April's heart. Seriously, the girl's voice carries. It penetrates. You'll want her inside of you...ahem.
