iTunes Review

A young, obscure British singer-songwriter followed up two critically well-received but commercially disappointing albums of orchestral folk-pop with this stripped-down, bare and beautiful album from 1972. There's a lot of romantic hoo-hah surrounding tortured poet Drake, who died of an apparent overdose of antidepressant medication two years after the album's release, while still in his mid twenties. While the lyrics are not exactly upbeat ("You can say the sun is shining if you really want to," "I am the parasite of this town") this isn't really a downer album per se. It certainly is unrelentingly beautiful, pulling repeatedly at your heartstrings without ever resorting to cheap sentiment. With Drake's rich melodic voice and acoustic guitar abetted occasionally by a spare piano, Pink Moon is perfect music for a rainy day-whether you buy into its romantic myth or not.

A must

I bought this album last night. I had never heard of Nick Drake. I bought it from the recommendation of a friend. I spent the next 28 minutes listening in awe as if at the feet of Drake in my living room. Absolutely incredible! Every person who is a person should have Drake in their collection as a staple After listening I bought everything else he's ever done. Incredible.

Timeless

It's hard to beleive that this album was released in 1972. If it had been released yesterday, it would be totally relevent, and able to stand on it's own. It seems very similar to Bon Ivers For Emma, Forever Ago. Wonder if Justin Vernon was an admirer. I also hear his influence in the music Eddie Vedder did for Into The Wild. Just a man and his guitar, making incredibly stirring music. The guitar pickings and rythms are very unique. His sound is clearly his own, he was a man with a musical vision that managed to record something that came from his soul, and remains timeless. Truly art.
I first heard the song Pink Moon covered by Walt Mink. The Walt Mink version is just as amazing, maybe more amazing than the original. At the time I didn't know it was a cover. At some point I heard the original in a film. I wish I could find that Walt Mink album, Miss Happiness, whole thing was smoking.
This Nick Drake album should be in any popular music lovers collection. No doubt.

There's not one song on this album that I don't like. I just found out today that he died. I'm so sad because he is my favorite artist, next to Tracy Chapman.
Was one of his songs in Seven Pounds?
